The people of Chocolateville
Wanted a lovely new church
For an innovative design
They decided to search

The village of Chocolateville

A competition was held
And unique concepts requested
But every idea submitted
The committee rejected
At last, the town settled
On a gingerbread chapel
Sir Chocolate seized the opportunity
With construction recipes to dabble

Sir Chocolate and Lady Sweet considering the chapel design

It was a huge undertaking
To get this project off the ground
And lots of enthusiastic helpers
Needed to be found
Sir Chocolate and Lady Sweet
Undertook to make the dough
Acquiring all the ingredients
To be added in the correct ratio
The gingerbread was delicious
With a slightly lemony taste
The numerous bits and cut-offs
Were eaten and didnโ€™t go to waste
The family of giant gobstoppers
Had great fun rolling it out
Then the Baby Cookie Monster
Cut out the pieces with his snout
A piece of food with a face and a beak

Meet the Baby Cookie Monster

For this job his nose was perfect
With its flat and saw-like edge
And when heโ€™d finished the walls
He cut out each window ledge
The friendly Baked Alaska Dragon
With much artistry and finesse
Helpfully baked each piece
With a blast of his fiery breath
A green dragon toy with sharp teeth

Meet the Baked Alaska Dragon

There were a few accidents
Some parts had to be remade
When a bit of over-baking
Made them to dark a shade
The Nougat Clowns melted boiled sweets
In a great pot on an open fire
Pouring the mixture into the window holes
While it was still very hot

Meet the Nougat Clowns

The windows looked fantastic
With a stained-glass effect
Which the villagers all thought
Made their church look perfect
Now everything was ready
It was time to get the chapel built
The roof was the most difficult
As it attached at a gradual tilt
Stinkpot, the troll, and his two strong sons
Came down from their mountain cave
And offered to erect the construction
Which was kind and rather brave
Extra-long liquorish whips
Were used in place of rope
They were strong enough to hold each slab
Which gave the overseers hope
A gingerbread house with a group of figurines

Stinkpot and his sons getting ready for the construction work

With much huffing and puffing
The trolls heaved each piece into place
And used some big chocolate struts
The outside walls to temporarily brace
A gingerbread house with cookies and people

Stinkpot and his sons assembling the roof of the chapel

The children who lived in a boot
Arrived with royal icing in pails
When used to cement gingerbread
This confectionary glue never fails

The children who lived with their young mother in a boot

The children swarmed up the walls
And applied the icing thickly
With their great enthusiasm
The job was finished very quickly
The icing was soon hard and set
The church was nearly complete
Chocolate log seats were installed
And caramel benches for peopleโ€™s feet
A gingerbread house with candy and a couple of people

Description automatically generated

The villages considering the finished church

The Ice-cream Rainbow Fairies came to visit
And brought a cute white bunny
As a gift for the children
Who fed him milk and honey

Sir Chocolate and the seven Ice-cream Rainbow Fairies

He would live in the church garden
And play with the sugar mice
Entertaining the small children
Which they thought was jolly nice
A gingerbread house with a person and a pig

Description automatically generated

Sir Chocolate and the sugar mice outside the completed chapel

The construction was strong and sound
The church could withstand the passage of time
The people came to worship every week
When they heard the large sugar bells chime

War Heroes Who Can’t Rest; An Author Who Discovers Them Sometimes the best way to teach history is to let a ghost tell his own story. The other half of the time, the modern-day author, Michelle, and her husband Tom move into a home haunted by these three spirits of the past who can’t settle their issues without help. 1. Do your grandkids ever want to make the recipes? My grandmother and I used to bake from the time I was old enough to stand on a chair to reach the table and the sink. My major contribution was stirring up bubbles in the dishwater, though.
