#WQ #9: March 1: ORDER/ARRANGED

WEDNESDAY QUOTES Logo by Donna @ Retirement Reflections

“Wanting something is not enough. You must hunger for it. Your motivation must be absolutely compelling in order to overcome the obstacles that will invariably come your way.”

Les Brown

Happy Wednesday and welcome to WQ. Again we have a word used differently in quotes this week. In order, in that order, come to order, order me some cake, alphabetical order, legal order, monastic order, the taxonomy of order – a higher order of insects.

Follow where your quotes lead you and have fun with your own arrangement.

Order: 1. the arrangement or disposition of people or things in relation to each other according to a particular sequence, pattern, or method. 2. an authoritative command, direction, or instruction. 3. request (something) to be made, supplied, or served.

Order Your Secrets to Success Here

“I never could have done what I have done without the habits of punctuality, order, and diligence, without the determination to concentrate myself on one subject at a time.

Charles Dickens

This advice not only pertains to writing but to cooking a meal or anything you set your heart on doing. What skills have you developed by practicing punctuality, order, diligence, and concentration?

“Order and simplification are the first steps toward the mastery of a subject.”

Thomas Mann

This quote speaks to the heart of writing and teaching curriculum. For example, learning calculus builds on an understanding of simple mathematics and how real numbers are combined and broken apart. If you learn concepts in order, then you can master each step of complicated equations.

Remember how you learned to drive, began to think critically, started to take photos, and wrote stories? Looking back, do you want to make changes because you know more now? I do.

Cakes in a Row

“Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep.”

Le Corbusier

We all like putting our ducks in a row. I’m assuming that Le Corbusier meant getting all your cakes and cookies in good order.

“Never give an order that can’t be obeyed.”

Douglas MacArthur

Fortunately, God didn’t order us to put the clouds in order but we were ordered to take care of the earth.

In Memory of Puppy Girl: Chronological Order

July 2009-February 28, 2023

“Dogs are miracles with paws.”

Susan Kennedy

On the last day of February 2023, Kalev (dog in Hebrew) better known as Puppy Girl breathed her last earthly air and moved up to where the air is perfect.

She had three seizures within 24 hours, the last one beginning at about 11:00 pm. We took her to the emergency hospital. They said her prognosis was not good even with seizure medications which were to be taken three times a day.

Vince and I made the painful decision to give the doctor the order to take our beloved Kalev out of pain forever. Our lives will never be the same. She’d been with us for nearly thirteen and a half years and gave us so much devotion and affection.

  1. As you can see, I’m very behind on my emails. So sorry to hear about your sweet girl. She would always bring smile to our faces when she joined you on our weekly Zoom calls. It’s been over a year since our dear Frances left us and we still miss her. Hugs from afar. Carol

    1. Thank you, my friend. She is sorely missed. I know it takes a long time to stop missing them. I’m so sorry about your sweetie pie, Frances. I thought I was past crying, but when I told my neighbor yesterday and gave her all of Kalev’s clothes and other doggie things, she was way too sympathetic.

  3. Every pet is another hostage to fortune, but here we are with two more after losing one of ours a few years back (at only 4 years old) to an unexplained seizure. that was a shock, but maybe losing Pickle in the following year (at almost 16) is a longer-lasting grief. In both cases, the prognosis was too painful to put them through for little, if any, improvement.
A new pet is never a replacement, but it keeps you too busy to brood.

    1. A loss at four years old, that is sad. Your are the third person besides us who lost one to seizures at such a young age. PG was not especially young but she was healthy right to the end. We have had more cats than dogs, but I know exactly what you mean. You don’t replace them, but each pet has their own personality that draws them to you. Like you say, that keeps us busy. I am not ready for that yet. Maybe after while. We lost two within less than two months. I’m ready to stop losing for a little bit. 🙂

  5. I am so sorry about your dog. We have lost so many — I can’t actually remember how many. That’s the price we pay for the love we get. I’ve always thought it was worth it, but I wonder if, after Duke, we’ll be able to deal with it again. My guess is no. I think the Duke is our last.

    1. I agree. They asked if we wanted to go in with her. I couldn’t face that. I’m not sure I want to put my heart through another loss. Then there is the other side of the story. What if we are the ones to go and leave them? Will someone find them in time? Will they be cared for and loved? I never thought there would be a time when I wouldn’t want to have a dog, but that time might be now. It’s too soon to tell. thanks for your kind words, and I hope Duke lives a long, uneventful life and keeps his own teeth clean.

      1. Garry will be 81 at the beginning of April and I’ll be 76 next week. I’m pretty sure it would be irresponsible to take on another pet at this point. The idea of living with a dog or any pet is awful, but the idea of leaving them and wondering if anyone would take care of them is worse.

        1. Yes it is. Our son (my stepson) still lives in CA, so it would be hard for him to be here in time. Cindy, Vince’s sister lives close, but she is our age. You and Vince are the same age. It’s gotten a lot younger than it was when we got married and his dad was this age!

          Like

          1. My mother never reached my age. She was gone at 68. But I can’t count on my son or granddaughter. Kaity is too busy with work and really so is Owen. Sometimes, reality gets in the way of life, but I’m pretty sure Duke will be our last dog. It’s hard to imagine a life without a dog, but Duke’s just 7. He will, I hope, be with us for a while. Garry comes from a very long lived family and is for his age, pretty spry — even counting all the complaints. But none of us will be here forever and I don’t want any suffering because we can’t be there for them. Bad enough I’m sure when I’m gone no one will care for the birds or the flowers.

Our generation was very responsible. I’m not sure the kids are responsible in the same way we have been. AND they aren’t earning as much money, either.

            Like

          2. I think our son is doing well. He’s not earning as much as I did, but between him and his wife, they are doing well. they live modestly, so I’m proud of them. She has one daughter in her late 20s whom I haven’t met. We are trying to get things to a point at which he won’t have too much to do because he is an only child. My parents were only children, and caring for aging parents fell heavily on both of them. Vince’s sister is also single, so her care will fall on one of the nieces or nephews, and there are only three. Jason will be the most likely to inherit her as well. He is such a good guy. 🙂

  18. Aww, your brave little Puppy Girl…I remember when she defended you against the raccoon! She is having a blast with Aero and Gideon, our cats, and has made new heavenly friends! Gary Kurz, author of Wagging Tales in Heaven writes that our pets do not wait for us because they are in the presence of God….BUT when we do go home they will greet us as enthusiastically as ever. Even after 5 months of Aero being gone, this thought brings me peace.

Your post was very orderly and provided more food for thought as I integrate these ideas into my Sunday Stills post “Out of this World.” I loved the orderliness of all those cakes. I would gladly eat them in order too! My temperament orders me to seek order and routine in my life–this post speaks to these concepts 🙂

    1. You are very orderly, my friend. I enjoyed your routines when we were together. You never missed a German lesson. That impressed me!

Puppy Girl was way too small to defend me. the raccoon had her paws wrapped around Puppy Girl. Poor little thing was scared to death, and you thought I was a coyote! LOL Now you know what a great screamer I am. 🙂 BTW, screaming was totally ineffectual. It brought no help to the scene and it didn’t scare the raccoon. It might have scared PG more than she was already scared. It taught her how to scream because she let out a whoop as she ran in to tell Vince about her experience!
