Written for Natalie’s Weekend Coffee Share

Weather

Happy weekend already! It’s warmed up to 36 here in Prescott, AZ. The three inches of snow that fell here last night is melted and mostly dry where it’s been shoveled. We feel like mountaineers. I looked that up to see if it was a word and yay, it is.  Mountaineer – a native or inhabitant of a mountainous region.

Fitness & Exercise

My walking partner, Barbara, and I walked around the mall, one day, but most of my walking, about 10,000 steps a day has been in the house during this snowy week. I went to the gym one day for a yoga class and plan to go again. It was closed today because of the snow. I watched a video on the Silver Sneakers website today.

Yesterday Vince and I did an online class together. He thought it was way too easy and wasn’t doing anything. But I can tell a difference in my strength, balance, and a little in my breathing after just a week.

I started tracking my food on Fitbit – at least for a while. I reached Day 24 with no sweets, and Day 11 with no bread without seeing any appreciable change in weight, so I amped it up a bit to see what might be going on. It’s easy to do once you have your normal foods logged in and much easier than writing everything down. That’s way too onerous.

I sound like a normal January fitness resolution maker, don’t I? Let’s hope I can keep it up. Fitness is A much more compelling goal as you age. There’s a lot more going on to make people unfit, and my main concerns are NOT falling and BETTER breathing.

Reading

All this inclement weather sent me running to my Kindle for company, and I checked out Amazon Prime so that I don’t have to buy any books this month. I read Beyond the Moonlit Sea by Julianne Maclean.

Rough Riders published a book in 2014, I think and I started that this week. It’s so fun to read 99-word stories about different topics and themes from people you know. Well done Riders at Carrot Ranch.

I’ve also been reading a Chronological Bible for the last month or so, which feels very different than the normal Bible reading, which is a bit more random, and more interesting than reading from cover to cover. Right after the Creation story, the book took me right into the trials of poor Job who had the worst friends EVER!

Blogging & WOTY – Compelling

I published 14 posts last month and nine so far this month compared to 33 in January 2022. I participated in Bloganuary last year and didn’t this year. It was my biggest month last year. There is definitely a correlation between the number of posts published and the number of views.

My challenge, Wednesday Quotes, WQ still draws about the same rewarding participation as last year so that is lots of fun. I’m super pleased that I am keeping up with my goal of writing more poetry and have written 7 poems this month – a record for me. I can’t tell you if they are compelling or not.

I spent a lot of time experimenting with Lightroom and Canva this week and several people commented about my Canva angel. The pictures I edited today were all done in Lightroom to make them as compelling as possible. I was pleased with a couple of the pictures to which I added vignettes.

Interestingly, my Weekend Coffee Share posts do the same or better than my WQ challenge. Last week I think I visited most of the other coffee sharers and that’s my goal again this week. I will be on the road for a week, so I won’t be posting for next week’s coffee share.

Double Dips This Week

CMMC – Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge – Pick a topic from my photo – fog, weather, telescope, candid, metal wire, fence, building, lighthouse, mural, crow, bird, candid, beach, wild grass, blue, green, and silver.

My Choice

This includes fog and lighthouse, beach, green, silver, blue, wild grass, fence, metal, and candid shot.

Not only that, it was taken in Oregon at one of Cee’s favorite lighthouses. It has a dog rather than a bird, but I’m sure he’s on the prowl for a bird.

CBWC – Cee’s Black & White Challenge, Brashley’s Midweek Monochrome Challenge, and Monochrome Madness for Leanne Cole – Circles & Curves for Cee, Ruins for Brashley

Circles in a hotel lobby
St. Mary’s Church – Delaware Fun with Presets
Visiting ruins in ruined shoes with lots of circles
Ruined Bed in Bob’s Barn – watch your step!

W3 Poetry Prompt

This week David’s guest poet, Denise, invites us to try using technology for writing poetry. This first poem is an acrostic in which they ask you to enter your name and gender. Here’s how mine came out.

I like this Marvelous Marsha. Thank you Poem Generator.

M is for Mature, you always know what to do
A is for Amiable, so pleasant to be with
R is for Receptive, an open mind
S is for Sharp, always observant
H is for Hyperactive, perpetually on the move
A is for Analytical, solving problems with logic

This site has all types of poems you can create by filling in words that answer the questions the generator asks. Then the generator creates a poem using both the question and the answers you provide. If you can’t come up with a name for your band, there is even a band name generator available. I didn’t try it. Shala la la la la!

Lighthouses

By Biker Dudes
An Original Song

I get on with life as a explorer,
I'm an adventurous kinda person.
I like mountain climbing and parasailing.
I like to contemplate lighthouses.
But when I start to daydream,
My mind turns straight to beach.

Shala la la la la la!

I like to use words like 'awesome' and 'right on.'
I like to use words about lighthouses.
But when I stop my talking,
My mind turns straight to beach.

Shala la la la la la!

I like to hang out with Crock O. Dial and Jenny Rater.
But when left alone,
My mind turns straight to beach.

Shala la la la la la!

I hate thistles and splinters.
But I just think back to beach,
And I'm happy once again.

Shala la la la la la!

Next, I used the Word Contraction Generator. I learned: what a portmanteau is and some common ones like Emotion + icon = Emoticon “A portmanteau word is a contraction of two words or a group of words.” After a while the portmanteau becomes so familiar you don’t always know what the original words were.

To try it, I chose the words ankle and bracelet. This one made me cringe – BRACANKLE. Would you use the word ANKLBRA? ANKLET is what they are really called. I looked it up to make sure because the word also means a short sock.

Denise also suggested using Random Word Generator. This was fun, too. You can create several words, but I just did one starting with the letter R and ending with the letter K, having 9 letters. There were no such words. When I shortened the number of letters to 6, the word generated was reebok – small South African antelope.

What great learning tools for children, particularly the last one for learning vocabulary.

Chilled Coffee

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had to get up and down so many times during our visit, that my coffee got chilly. I hope you’ve had a wonderful and productive week. If you get a chance please visit my WQ post and share a Belly Laugh or two. You’ll be healthier at the end of the post. You know what “they” say about laughter!

  1. So much good stuff in this post Marsha. I wish I liked tracking my food…I don’t…lol. The poem generator sounds fun. I might have to try it. I’ve been doing good on my 10,000 steps a day, though today was hard!

    1. Every day holds a new challenge, doesn’t it? I’m am nor religious about tracking food, for sure. I’m traveling this week, so tracking is out. I didn’t bring my computer, so everything is harder on a small phone. Have a great week!!

  5. Hi Marsha,
Yep – I’m late to the party for this (past) weekend, but you’re always a gracious host so here I am.

Hey – you might like to know this. You may have noted that I wrote up how accelerometers work. Those are the tiny devices in our phones and pedometers that sense motion – like walking – and in this case, enabling our devices to count steps. I too am on a mission to build up my health by staying moving and counting steps each day is helping me stay ambulatory. I’ve decided there is no longer any excuse, well almost none, about doing 10K steps/day.

These two came together when I found how to boost my step count with almost no additional effort or (more important) TIME. Now, I simply take smaller steps over the same amount of distance, like where I used to take 8 steps to go a certain distance, I now take 9 or 10, but move my legs faster so I’m not taking more time, am getting a tad more exercise and increasing my step count without working (much) harder.

My accelerometer driven pedometer is rewarding me with what feels like a lot more steps counted than i used to be able to collect in the same time and now I’m making that 10K mark on more days.

Also, I read my bible daily and have read it both by category of interest and chronologically as you’re doing. I like them all enough, but no matter what I do, the prophets remain hard for me. There just isn’t much of a story to pull out of them. I think I know how to fix this but it would take a lot of research and I’m not sure I’m interested enough to go for it.

Anyway – blessings – keep walking and I proudly get a lot of my steps in around the kitchen island each morning as my tea is brewing. A step indoors counts as much as one outdoors.

    1. You approach everything you do with fervor and high energy. No wonder you’re so successful. Well done on stepping. Adding yoga and strength building is helpful, too in the job of keeping healthy. Not so good at losing weight, though!

I’m on my way to CA, so I’ll have a couple of slow days while traveling. I have lots of walking partners there.

  6. Good for you keeping up with your new exercise and eating routines. It gets easier the more you do it. I’ve been doing an online 30 minute exercise program every day now for almost a year. It might only be 30 minutes but it really has made a difference.

    1. It’s discouraging to be faithful for a month and see few results, though. However, that said, I am stronger. Yoga also targets my breathing, which has been compromised. So it is worth it. The last time I lost weight quickly was when I was super sick and I couldn’t eat more than a few bites and I was full. That was scary for an eater like me!

  7. Hi Marsha – I loved seeing all your photos – the b&w ones were very evocative. I also enjoyed your reference to Job and his friends – that tied in well with offering me advice on my post about my difficult situation. Interesting seeing how many blog posts you’ve done for the month – you’re far more prolific than I am – I’m a once a week girl these days and no prompt following – it’s interesting how we all evolve with our blogging.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Leanne. I love your word evocative. I’m honored by it. Job is such a strange story. One friend of mine called God mean, and indeed, that is how he appears. Yet, in all Job trusted Him as we need to do even when we don’t understand what He’s doing or why. I couldn’t answer my friend. Parents will tell you that when you lose a child, other children don’t make up the difference. Since we just lost our cat, Nutter Butter, I can vouch for that, but the pain does dull. Life is such a mystery.

Our blogging does evolve, yet my style is much the same. I use my blog to tell my stories, but I also try to benefit someone else as I blog, if only the person who takes the time to host a challenge. I don’t know why it is so addictive, but it is. 🙂 Hope you have a better week this week.

It doesn’t take much to rearrange mine. BTW, I can feel the magnetic force of your personality as well, urging me up out of my comfy couch to take a walk just so we can have a piece of pie at the end of the trail. 21. Well done on all your fitness and writing goals. Coffee chat is more popular than WQ, I wonder why? WQ is one of my favourite prompts on wordpress 😊 I love the variety of responses generated too. Have a great break. KL ❤️

    1. Thank you so much KL. Not to minimalize the wonderful comments generated by WQ, Coffee Share only involves reading, no response post needed. Some of WCS’s popularity on my blog might be titles, though. Some of the titles have generated more views than almost all my posts. Coffee with a Touch of Travel was super popular. Lots of people love coffee. So there’s that draw. I’m not sure what they expect in the post based on my titles, though. The coffee I offer may not live up to its promises. There were no free tickets at the end of the post. WQ promotes some interesting conversations, which is why I love it so much. It has a life of its own. We had dinner with neighbors last night, and conversation ended up with belly laugh movies we had enjoyed. It ended up with another dinner and movie date to watch some of our favorite funny movies. So WQ is not going away any time soon. 🙂

  22. I’m interested in how you track your food on Fitbit. I tried doing it but it felt too overwhelming with having to weigh every single thing! It was interesting though, I started with a breakfast and was fascinated to see how many calories are in my breakfast (not that I need to worry because the rest of the day is quite lean) but of course it’s because I eat eggs, nuts and yoghurt. I’d love to track the food for a few weeks but it just seemed liked so much work.
Well done with stopping the sweets. I also stopped eating unnecessary sugar, I only use some honey in my coffee and on my yoghurt and I’ll have a few biscuits after our gig on Saturday nights (because the pub owner gives us tea and snacks before closing) and that’s it. I don’t miss sweets at all actually.

    1. It sounds like you are doing well with your eating. Fitbit counts the calories, and I’m not super exact with my measurements. You can save some of your recipes or things that you eat from restaurants. Or you can choose the calorie count of a dish that is like one you’ve eaten at a restaurant. I don’t want to be too obsessed about it. Who has that kind of time? I messed up last night at at our friends’ for dinner and had a slice of bread before I even thought about it – habit. I paid for it and put on almost 4 pounds overnight. I’m hoping it slips right back off today. Basically, I don’t have an answer if the weight doesn’t come off eventually. I know that avoiding sweets and bread are healthy whether or not I lose weight.
