Cee challenges us to find pictures of eyes for her Fun Foto Challenge this week. Seeing out of these eyes might be a challenge in itself.

David from The Skeptic Kaddish invites us to create poetry together. The photographs inspired the poem on the topic of poverty, which is another challenging new form for me.

W3 Poetry Prompt from the Skeptic’s Kaddish

This duodora was written in response to Murisopsis’ W3 prompt, which was to write a poem of exactly 14 lines on the theme of poverty (moral, financial, romantic, etc.).

What Is a Duodora?

  • A quatorzain (14 lines) made up of 2 septets;
  • Syllabic: 4/6/5/5/5/10/10 syllables per line;
  • Rhymed Axxxxxb Axxxxxb;
    • L1 is repeated as a refrain that begins the 2nd stanza;
    • x is unrhymed.

Poverty in the Making

Fancy trinkets
questionable value
credit card purchases
with no thought of thrift
squandering assets
for necessities
not so the poor who count pennies and dimes
can't afford to provide trout for a treat

Fancy trinkets
eyeglasses with rhinestones
art lessons and paint
dollar for statue
an art show delight
not so the poor who need dollars and cents
sleep in a bag in a tent on the street

  2. So many eyes! And the poem is great, especially given the tight constraints around the form

    1. Thanks, Sarah. Form poetry can often sound strained. I hope this one doesn’t sound too strained.

  3. You’ve quite a variety of eyes here, Marsha, and well done on the poetry. I haven’t written poetry for too long. Perhaps I’ll try to get going with it again this year.

  6. You always make me smile, Marsha, and sometimes you make me want to stand up and cheer!
    I get so befuddled counting syllables that I forget to write words.

    1. Thanks, the prompt took me there – to a sad place. David had a different take on poverty and went to gratitude for what he has each day.

  9. What a superb collection! The mask is scary, though. Reminds me of Dr Who episode, set in WWII.

    1. Exactly! They were developed during WWI. By 1938, the British government issued them to citizens in case of gas attacks. Maybe if we had worn these during Covid, we could have eliminated it!
