My Take on Holiday Treats

My sister-in-law, Cindy loves to bake. The other day she started at 10:00 in the morning and finished MOPPING THE FLOOR at 7:00 pm. How did I get so lucky? She gave me some cookies to serve my guests for dinner earlier this week. These two cookies were especially great.

Super yummy Christmas cookies Pictures came from Pinterest

Cindy substituted skittles and a bit of white frosting for the cinnamon hots that the recipe called for. That was an unexpected bonus.

I got this tidbit from Cindy Georgakas. Did you know that STRESSED spelled backward spells DESSERTS?

“Christmas is like candy; it slowly melts in your mouth sweetening every taste bud, making you wish it could last forever.”

Baked Creamed Corn Casserole photo by Sophisticook

Even though I got this picture and recipe from Pinterest, my grandmother made this every Christmas and I think I ate most of it.

I loved creamed corn so much that I put a can of it in a chocolate cake mix once and baked it. I probably told you how that came out. In my defense, I was only 43.

Grandma’s recipe, like this one by the Unsophisticook recipe, had 6 items: canned whole kernel corn, canned creamed corn, sugar, flour, eggs, and butter, plus a touch of salt and pepper. I think I used brown sugar rather than white. I may have added mustard powder – don’t ask me why. One recipe called for a package of cornbread. That would be good but not as pudding-like.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all. What are your favorite holiday foods?

  1. I have just reread this with my grandchildren’s festive creations on my mind. Oh wait…the is some on the floors, and walls and I found glitter in my hair and….they are so happy to do bake and sing and laugh and eat yumminess. They were with us for three days. A tired, and very happy gramma here…

PS. Thank you for note on my post. I tried to respond, and somehow it disappeared. Gwad… at least I read it. Hoping you have the best of weeks . Merry Christmas.

  6. Those Ritz cookies look incredible! My son is allergic to peanuts, but I bet they’d work with sunflower butter. Must try!

    1. I saw that. I’m not a big clam chowder fan, but I bet yours is worth trying! Tumeric cookies sounds interesting, too! Who would guess? That would make them pretty healthy, I think! 🙂

        1. Whaaaaaat? All those cookies….gone! My figure thanks your family and friends. My taste buds say bah humbug to them. If they are half as good as pavlova, I’m really missing something! 🙂 Don’t tell them I said bah humbug, though! 🙂

Sometimes cooking can result in a wonderful surprise, that is why I write down my cooking adventures in case it does taste marvellous and I want to recreate a dish in the future.
    In this case…….nah

  11. Funny to read this right now as I am getting ready to try a new to me Christmas cookie recipe (Taylor Swift’s Chai Sugar Cookies). I love chai and I love eggnog (it’s used in the glaze). Fingers crossed 🙂

And, yes, I absolutely edit my posts if I find a typo… it would drive me nuts not to fix it. (And, I am grateful to anyone kind enough to point it out if they see one in my post.)

    1. Yay! I do too. I go nuts when I find errors! 🙂 Your chai/eggnog cookie sounds yummy. Where did you say you live?

  12. I don’t like much about Christmas food. I will tolerate turkey, as long as it has cranberry sauce (as a child I made sure it was ketchup). The vegetables are okay, but I can leave sprouts off. I don’t like raisins so I don’t like Christmas pudding, or mince pies. I go to my daughter’s on the day and her partner cooks the dinner to perfection.

    1. My husband would rather have lasagna. So we do about half the time. I love turkey and all the fixings. I particularly love potatoes and gravy. Lucky you to have someone who cooks dinner to perfection. You can’t ask more than that.

    1. LOL, Elke. I hope it’s chocolate cream. That would be easy to eat. How long before you can eat real food again? This is not good news at Christmas time. 🙂

      1. I’m hoping for next Sunday. We are going to a Christmas market. If I can’t eat any of the food offerings I will hit the glühwein stands! 🍷

          1. Glühwein = mulled wine. If it’s below 0° I will not put anything freezing inside me 🥶

          2. hahaha that leaves out ice cream, then. Bummer. Better stick to wine. 🙂

  15. You know it’s nearly supper time here, don’t you, and I’m very hungry! Savoury mince, Yorkshire puds and veg for us, but not for an hour or so. I truly love Christmas pudding but have never actually made one. That’s what supermarkets are for, isn’t it? If I had a little helper by my side- no, not Santa’s elves!- I might be tempted to bake but honestly, I just make a mess. These all look delish though.

    1. Grocery stores/supermarkets are amazing now. I have a cooked chicken in my refrigerator, some potatoe salad in a plastic container, and that’s it for now, but I’m down to nubs. We don’t cook like our parents and grandparents did. 🙂 Your meal sounds delicious.

  16. Hi Marsha, a lovely post. I love your SIL’s treats, I’ve always fancied making the Rice Krispy tree wreaths but have never actually done it. I make a gingerbread creation every year for the Gingerbread Christmas smackdown challenge. This year I am making a Christmas train with a few surprises.
