September 28: Fire, Writer’s Choice or WOTY
“โThat old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air โฆ Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last yearโs mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.โ

September on the Run
โBy all these lovely tokens
โ Helen Hunt Jackson, September
September days are here,
With summerโs best of weather
And autumnโs best of cheer.โ
Contrary to some rumors, I am not dead and I’m still blogging. Even though I didn’t blog much in September, I spent a lot of time meeting with bloggers. When you meet bloggers, it’s like meeting movie stars in a way. You’ve seen them on your computer screen, and you know quite a bit about them. The difference is that they know a lot about you, too, and the conversation doesn’t need any awkward starters.
Meyer, AZ

We chose to meet in Meyer, Arizona at a great restaurant and hotel about halfway between Phoenix and Flagstaff so we could include Lisa from Lisa Micro of the Macro could join us. At the last minute, Lisa wasn’t able to join us, but Jodie and her gang still came north and we had an amazing time getting better acquainted and taking pictures in the lovely setting of The Cellar at Creekside.

The man behind the scenes, Rob, Jodie’s amazing photographer, IT guy, and husband, joined the group again this time.

Pacific Northwest
I was blessed to spend the last ten days of September as Terri Webster Schrandt’s trip-mate in both Portland and at her home in Spokane. I was the best customer of the Nine Mile Falls Bank of Schrandt as well as the Webster-Schrandt Tour and Taxi Service as well as a guest in her and her cousin’s hospitable bed and breakfasts.
We had two amazing blogger meetups, the first in downtown Portland, Oregon with Diana Peach of Myths of the Mirror and Miriam Hurdle of The Showers of Blessing. It was hard for us to choose a place so Diana stepped in and saved the day and suggested McMenamins Ram’s Head on S.W. Hoyt. We got there, but they weren’t ready for bloggers (or anyone else), so we walked a few blocks away and dined at McMenamins Blue Moon Tavern on SW. 21st.

Diana had told us what she was wearing or we might not have recognized her with her beautiful long hair. We chatted about both Diana’s and Miriam’s books, which are on my list of next reads. I packed my charging cable for my Kindle, but forgot the Kindle!

During our time in Portland, Terri and I visited the Portland Rose Garden. The backdrop of huge evergreen trees and nice pathways were a couple of amenities that our beautiful rose garden in Woodlake didn’t have. It must be a thrill to be able to enjoy performing arts in this gorgeous outdoor amphitheater.
Terri’s cousin, Maria, told us about bringing her kids here where the elementary-aged girls would perform impromptu “operas” for any visiting audience that might be in the seats. They always got some applause. She must have been an amazing mom. Her kids are all grown and successful now, and she is left with a big house, which she graciously shared with us for six days.

Fort Vancouver
Kirstin of Loving Life had to work the day of our Portland meetup, so we drove to Vancouver, WA, and had a day of adventure with her starting at Fort Vancouver. We arrived on a day that was free, but Terri snagged a lifetime pass to all the National Parks for just $80.

Outside the fort was a garden with all sorts of vegetables and flowers. One of the garden visitors ran up to me. I thought I looked like great-grandma or someone he knew. After I put him down, he greeted each of us with a hug. Terri caught him up in her arms and I got the cutest picture of her EVER. She looks about 30 don’t you think?

I’ll share more pictures of the garden in later posts that correspond with future challenges. We got insider information on upcoming topics for Sunday Stills, so we are well-prepared. I’ll post my Sunday Stills post on Wednesday, so you will see more of our trip.
Inside the post were many reconstructed buildings with some great doors and windows. We did not get inside them all but saw the Big House, the Counting House, the Fur Store, and the Kitchen.

One of the more interesting buildings was the kitchen. Since one of the themes for this week’s WQW is Fire, these next pictures fit the theme. This woman volunteers each week to bake in the kitchen. She has 25 years of experience cooking over an open fire.
Tigard
We loved going to Terri’s cousin Maria’s home in Tigard after a day of sightseeing, walking on trails, or around the neighborhood. She fed us fabulous home-cooked meals and we shared stories until her bedtime. Terri and I spent the rest of the evening relaxing reading a book or curating our pictures for a while before bed. I finished the book I purchased at the Phoenix airport, Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty.
“The Delaney family love one another dearly– it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other . . . If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father? This is the dilemma facing the four grown children.”
Amazon
We didn’t meet up with Cee on this trip so somehow it just didn’t feel right to go to the Dahlia Fields without her. Fortunately for us, Maria’s neighbor had the most glorious dahlia gardens in front of her house. She came out and talked to us as we stalked her flowers and told us about growing them.

Spokane and Nine Mile Falls, Washington
โAll the months are crude experiments, out of which the perfect September is made.โ
โ Virginia Woolf

After spending six days in Portland, Terri and I took off for her home in Nine Mile Falls, Washington. We stopped halfway in Kennewick for lunch. Our waitress was so friendly and the food was great at the Red Robin, but the best part is that I got my purse back. I didn’t notice it was gone until we got to the rest stop about an hour and a half away. When I called the restaurant one person told me I would have to talk to a manager the next day because they didn’t mail things like that. I would have to go back and get it. That was out of the question.
As it turned out, our waitress, Gina Taggart, was the manager on duty when I called the next morning. She offered to drive it to Spokane on the day I had to leave, but we all agreed that sending it to my home in Prescott would be better. Fortunately, I had brought my passport and stored it in my computer case instead of my purse, so I was able to fly home. My purse arrived safely at home with everything intact, yesterday afternoon. Thank you, Gina. And thank you Terri and Hans for loaning me money to keep me afloat until I got back.

Besides admiring their beautiful home, pole barn, she-shed, and amazing neighborhood, Terri, Hans, and I had a great time taking short hikes and seeing the sights. Her new home is as lovely as it looks online and very comfortable. I had my own bedroom and bathroom at one end of the house and they were at the opposite end. Here are just a few of the views from our hikes along the Spokane River.

Your Pacific Northwest trip looks so sunny! I went in early summer many years ago and it rained. When my husband and I were in Portland, we rented a bike and biked in the rain!

That’s the normal there for fall, winter and spring, Julie. In the summer it is usually dry. Last year or the year before, I forget, the temperature reached 120 during the fires. So rain is a good thing! LOL Portland is a beautiful town to bike.

Wow, your September is full of adventure, Marsha. It’s wonderful that you meet up with so many bloggers. I “talk” with bloggers more so than with my family and friends. I know I’m kind of taking a break for house selling and house hunting, packing, and eventually moving. I hope we can settle down soon so that I can be back to my blogging.
It was so much fun meeting with you, Diana, and Terri. It was like meeting old friends because we know each other in many ways. I love all of your photos. It’s not as hot here. I hope Arizona’s weather is cooling down a little. Enjoy your October!

Hi Miriam, We are having very cool weather now. I pulled out my tomatos and my dead flowers. I only had two cold green tomatoes to save. We had hail and 50 MPH winds two days ago. It was amazing to watch. I loved meeting both of you in person and I hope we can do it again next year. House hunting is exhausting, isn’t it. It is especially hard to coordinate when you are moving out of state. If you haven’t looked in East Mooreland area of Portland, you might consider it. We visited friends there and it was so lovely. It’s right across the river from Tigard in the southern end of Portland.

Our weather is cooler also. It’s better for open house since we don’t have central air. Many Flowers died in the summer. I now can plant a few to make my garden look even better.
We’re taking a break from house hunting until we get another offer. Thank you for your suggestion, Marsha! We’ll look into it.

Better to wait until you have sold. You donโt want to get caught with two house payments!

I know. It would be just one house payments. I don’t want to do even that! Paying interest is a waste of money.

Canada is such a huge place, Deb. I know two bloggers in Toronto, but you would really have to travel some to get there. Are you still doing much traveling? I know it is hard, but if you do, then there are probably bloggers in those areas. You know tons and tons of people. We started talking about our Portland meetup in May – or at least that’s when I booked my flight. Even then there were only 5 of us all together, but that’s fun. If you have a reason to travel somewhere, it’s worth a little planning to meet up with even one. I went to Australia to meet two bloggers as far apart geographically as northern Washington and southern California. We had a great time and it was so worth it. Friends for life.

Phew Marsha! What a whirlwind you’ve been on – and how long did it take you to put this post together?!?!?! Enjoyed being a fly on the wall to hear all about it and to see so many bloggers I’ve followed for so long. Good for you for catching up with them! Knew you and Terri were having a meet-up and it looks like fun was had by all. And thank goodness the purse thing worked out. That could have been a serious bummer! Good for you for having your passport held separately!!!

Hi Tina, our trip was both whirlwind and relaxing. It’s so fun to have a photo partner and compare our pictures, look at different perspectives. Terri and I had a lot of down time and exercise time, too. I didn’t try to blog, and that does take a long time, doesn’t it? I worked on my WQW post off and on all day. Hans commented to me, “You don’t read as fast as Terri, do you?” So funny to be compared on that metric. I don’t read, walk, talk, or write as fast as Terri. Fortunately, it’s not a competition, but it does limit how much you can do in a day. My cutback is sleep. I don’t seem to need as much as most people, so I can take my time at other things. ๐ Thanks for the comment – talk about a busy person! That’s you.

Hi Marsha,
You know my wife and I just completed a long, 2 segment road trip.
I can tell you that had we driven off so far without her purse it would have triggered an immediate rewind of all that driving. She would be her sedate version of frantic without it and the rest of our journey would just have to bear the adjustment.
If you ever create a blogger meetup in the the California Sonoma Wine area, or even the San Francisco Bay area or Silicone Valley – I’d love to be a part.
Meeting some of these folks who I only know virtually would be a real treat.
LikeLiked by 3 people
I wasn’t frantic because I immediately shut down my credit card and I had my passport for traveling. I knew they would mail the purse – why wouldn’t they? What are they going to do, keep it for posterity? Terri and Hans did all the driving so I didn’t need my license for that either. Terri was a little more panicked than I was, to be honest, but then she loaned me money and the whole nine yards. She is a real friend, believe me. No longer just virtual, for sure.
As for a blogger meetup in CA, that would be wonderful. I am done traveling for a while, and the holidays are coming up, so if you organize one, I would suggest waiting until after the first of the year. I don’t know too many bloggers in that area – Carol Carlile and Cindy Georgakas, are the only two that come to mind.

I have to comment that I’ve seen lots of propellers for windmills on the highways, but I’ve never before seen one where the prop tip was bent up to shorten the total length. I wonder if that’s a requirement in some states?
