Vacation Animals

Last Friday for PPAC, I did a throwback of several horse stories. Today will be a bit of a throwback on live animal stories and photos that are some of my favorites. This picture was taken during a trip to pick up a used trailer we had purchased from someone on the Oregon Coast. On the way back, towing the trailer, our truck broke down in the mountains-right in front of a trailer park. The turn of events turned into an Accidental Vacation. You can read about this encounter in Chapter Seven.

Ducks are ubiquitous. I still like to take their pictures because they are such quack-ups. This vociferous duck lived in Delaware right on the river’s edge. He was out with his family picking up groceries from visitors like me who lounged on their patio/grocery store.

It’s not every day that an American gets to see a wallaby up close. When my blogging friend Carol and her husband took me to the Bunya Mountains in Queensland, the wallabies were as plentiful as the ducks on the lakes and rivers in the United States.

Chipmunks and squirrels are common in the United States. This well-educated chipmunk lived at Notre Dame University in Indiana.

Animals at Home

Pets add fluff (in the case of dogs and cats – not so much with pet turtles and goldfish) and interest to your life and a whole lot of work and worry. One of my favorite stories is how KalevAKA Puppy Girl came to live at our house. Her story was one of my first blog posts and had 9 likes. I was over the moon thrilled. Someone actually read my blog. 🙂

Piggles was my favorite guinea pig, given to me by one of my teacher colleagues. You see pictures of my pets from long ago, like Piggles in Sunday Stills: Pets Are Forever. I wrote this poem for her in in the early 1990s when I first started teaching as part of a science/math/language arts unit for my fourth graders. At the time this was a song, but I didn’t write down the music. 

Cavia Porcellus

Cavia porcellus,
Cavia porcellus
What are you telling us? 
My cavia porcellus.

You flip, squeak, and hop,
Run around like a top,
Lie down quiet and stop,
A satisfied mop

Pull your food here and there.
Grow long teeth, nails and hair,
Chewing all but the air,
Hidden inside your lair.

Don't your jaws ever get sore?
My little herbivore?
Food you never store,
Always squealing, "More, more, more."

Animals on the Streets

Janet Webb and I found this great sign as we looked for doors in downtown Prescott.

Hi, I’m Marsha Ingrao, a retired educator and wife of a retired realtor. My all-consuming hobby is blogging and it has changed my life. My friends live all over the world. In November 2020, we sold everything and retired to the mile-high desert of Prescott, AZ. We live less than five miles from the Granite Dells, four lakes, and hundreds of trails with our dog, Kalev, and two cats, Moji and Nutter Butter. Vince’s sister came with us and lives close by. Every day is a new adventure.

    Wonderfully inspiring post, my friend! Your love for animals great and small, wild and domestic knows no bounds! I’m excited to link with this post tomorrow (road-trip traveling with pets). The pics of the wallabies are amazing and so cute to see your kitties as young’uns!       Thank you Aimer. There are so many things to take pictures of when you’re on vacation, but somehow, I always take pictures of ducks. Maybe it’s because they pose so nicely.

      I read that one in high school, but I don’t remember much about it. I should reread it. I do try to read classics as well as current books that are popular and bloggers’ books as well. I’m reading another Charles Dickens book on Kindle right now, David Copperfield. I just finished Great Expectations and before that The Bleak House. I also enjoyed The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. That one is very suspenseful and written much like Dickens writes.

      Thanks, Yvette. It was written as a poem to teach kids a few things about guinea pigs as we studied them. Seems a little juvenile now, but we had a great time with the unit. 🙂

      The kitties were adorable. And they loved being California cats. Here they are indoors always. Too many wild things. We could write a book-Where the Wild Things Are! Reading my poem now seems so babyish, but I was writing for a class of bilingual fourth graders.
