Prescott Downtown Series

This week I’m celebrating time spent with my blogging friend, Janet from This That and The Other Thing. It’s always a thrill to spend time with other bloggers. It’s even more of a thrill when they want to come to see me and we can roam through Prescott taking pictures for our blogs. Thanks to all of you who said hi on Janet’s blog. Wish you all could have come, too. We had a great time.

LAST WEEK’S FABULOUS BLOGGERS

Last week for PPAC #52, I had fun responses from all of you. With all the other challenges, even public and street art, I thank all the bloggers who participate in the Photographing Public Art Challenge. Please honor these bloggers with your visits this week.

IT’S EASY TO PLAY ALONG WITH #PPAC

  • There is no weekly theme even though my post has a theme with murals, statues, fountains, scrap art, graffiti, store windows, seasonal displays, car or art shows, artistic construction, or even artistic neighborhood decor. Photograph the public art that is available to you.
  • Art should be freely visible from a public street, freeway, or walkway or inside a publicly accessed building like a library. If you pay, it’s not public.
  • Photographers should have free access of use for their photos – no copyrights by the artists.
  • The challenge starts every Friday at 9:00 a.m. Phoenix Time and it ends on Thursday at noon.
  • Write a post on your blog, publish it, and include a link back to my weekly post not my page preferably in a comment. Sometimes pingbacks are missed. See how to create pingbacks here
  • Take time to visit other PPAC participants throughout the week. I recommend visiting at least two or three other participants in the community and leaving them a comment.
  • Have fun! Art is to be enjoyed!

For More Ideas about PPAC…

These early-bird participants might give you some great ideas about something you’ve never thought about as public art or how to photograph it.

My Choices for PPAC #53 Prescott Blogger Meet-Up

Janet and I didn’t have an agenda other than to take pictures of doors and public art and for Janet to see some of the Prescott sights. She couldn’t have come at a better time to get out of the Phoenix heat. It’s monsoon season in Prescott, the former Arizona capital, “Everybody’s Hometown,” and the “Home of the World’s Oldest Rodeo.”

Janet wanted to see some of the first homes of Prescott. So we drove down Mt. Vernon St. also known as the Senator’s Highway. The entire street decorates for Halloween and Christmas but these homeowners also decorated for July 4th and Rodeo Week.

“Yee-Haw Watch your back legs, Buddy.”
“Josie, what did you think of that monsoon rain last night?”

“I think those rodeo-lovin’ humans are gonna get a cool surprise when they sit down on the red chairs.”

“Ha ha ha, bulls won’t be the only critters seeing red, huh Josie?”

We chatted with a 93-year-old resident standing out on her broad front porch ready to watch the rain come down on us. The drop size increased and we thought it might be wise to get back in the car. We drove up the street to check out the rest of the homes. Before I could find a safe place to turn around, we were at Goldwater Lake. Wednesday is free parking at all the Prescott parks. So we lucked out again.

Coming back into town, we took a few more pictures of the historic homes. Then we headed out of town on Highway 69 to check out Lynx Lake to take some more pictures.

When I turned onto the road to get back to Highway 69, we drove until I wondered why it was taking so long to get back to Costco. Lucky that we went that way or we never would have found the original Mary Kay car.

Times must have been tough being a door-to-door or party salesperson in those wild-west days.

Ongoing on Always Write

  • July Story Chat, “Not a Proper Job” by another new (to us) author, Philip Cumberland AKA Fenlandphil’s Blog goes live July 5th
  • WQW #24 (Writer’s Quotes Wednesdays) – “Transportation – Whatever Floats” The only rule is to have at least one quote in your post about the topic. Remember a song can be a quote, too. Then just post a story, poem, or pictures that tie into and respond to your quote or quotes. The last day to post links is Tuesday at 12:00 noon Phoenix time.

Now it’s your turn.

I hope you are inspired to find your own unique art as you travel around with your camera this week, or rummage through your archives. Feel free to double dip and support your own favorite challenges along with PPAC.

    1. Wasn’t that a great find? Who knew? The bullet holes are the icing on the cake. Who uses a bright pink car for target practice?

  5. Oh wow you are delightfully funny!
The original Mary Kay car was hysterical – and did remind me of some ladies I knew who tried so hard to make big money with that company – including a sister n law who is now a Physician’s Assistant likes her work
Anyhow – also loved the dialogue with the flamingoes and chairs

    1. Thanks, Yvette. Dialogue is my specialty. If I could just do description… Sometimes you can just hear the conversations.

  6. LOL for the original Mary Kay car, that did crack me up Marsha. Sounds like you two had quite a time together! And I did love the decorations for rodeo week!!

    1. Thanks, Tina. That was such a great find. Who knew what a perfect piece of public art would be at the exact place where I realized I was going the wrong way and turned around and there it was! Thanks for your lovely comment! 🙂

  7. Colorful collection. How nice it is to be able to see public decorations not only in Christmas and Halloween!

I like the old car too. Old cars are interesting as public art and USA seems to have many. I currently know only one in my country Thailand; there may be more, but they are less common compared to USA.

    1. Some people still sell it, but you rarely see a pink car. My friend Paula used to sell it a few years ago.

    1. We thought we had run into a Bonnie and Clyde practice area. Janet said, “We are definitely in Arizona.” Target practice! Thanks for the congrats. If it had been up to me entirely, I’d still be talking about what a great idea it would be to do a challenge about public art! You were the driving force, my dear. 🙂
