“Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the tree house; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape…”
—Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird

Definition of Solstice
As you probably remember from grade school science class, “a solstice is the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun reaches its maximum or minimum declination, marked by the longest and shortest days (about June 21 and December 22). The solstice (combining the Latin words sol for “Sun” and sistere for “To Stand Still”) The summer solstice occurs when the Earth tilts toward the Sun at its maximum during its orbit.” Google searches
My Choice Quotes for Summer
Since I live in the Northern Hemisphere, we just reached the peak of daylight hours
“Sweet, sweet burn of sun and summer wind, and you my friend, my new fun thing, my summer fling.”
—K.D. Lang
This year I wanted to have flowers blooming all over. I have about three right now. We added a hummingbird feeder yesterday, and today a million other birds are stopping by our waterfall. I can see them from my desk but I’m not quick enough to take their pictures. Moji, our cat, has been chirping at them all morning from inside the house.
“Summer bachelors like summer breezes, are never as cool as they pretend to be.”
—Nora Ephron
Boys having fun showing off in the summer sun. Vince was in heaven watching these cars zip down Hwy 89. I grabbed these shots from my side of the car. Good thing I had run the car through the carwash. The photos are fairly spot-free if a little blurry.
“Summertime is always the best of what might be.”
—Charles Bowden
“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”
—John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley: In Search of America
I looked at Geoff from Tangental’s garden and mine can’t even come close. So I shot macros of the few blossoms there are, then cropped them. LOL! We actually killed off many of my plants by overwatering.
Vince gets a little crazy with the hose. He’s used to California flowers planted in the ground dying for a drink. These poor guys are in pots and some of the pots were missing holes at the bottom. The good thing for our plants is that there is a screen around everything this year which keeps out the javelina and rabbits. They came by looking for treats, though!
“I love summertime more than anything else in the world. That is the only thing that gets me through the winter, knowing that summer is going to be there.”
—Jack McBrayer
“Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.”
— Al Bernstein
The birdhouse came from At Home where I went crazy this summer curating a beautiful patio landscape. It’s been so fun adorning my patio with summer colors. I don’t want it to end! These last two sets of doors make a colorful exhibit for Sylvia’s (My Colorful Expressions) Lens Artist door challenge. I hope you enjoyed the colorful array of summer colors in these posts. There isn’t just one summer color!!!
