“Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the tree house; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape…”

For More Ideas about Summer Colors and Summer/Winter Solstice

Definition of Solstice

As you probably remember from grade school science class, “a solstice is the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun reaches its maximum or minimum declination, marked by the longest and shortest days (about June 21 and December 22). The solstice (combining the Latin words sol for “Sun” and sistere for “To Stand Still”) The summer solstice occurs when the Earth tilts toward the Sun at its maximum during its orbit.” Google searches

My Choice Quotes for Summer

Since I live in the Northern Hemisphere, we just reached the peak of daylight hours

“Sweet, sweet burn of sun and summer wind, and you my friend, my new fun thing, my summer fling.”

—K.D. Lang

This year I wanted to have flowers blooming all over. I have about three right now. We added a hummingbird feeder yesterday, and today a million other birds are stopping by our waterfall. I can see them from my desk but I’m not quick enough to take their pictures. Moji, our cat, has been chirping at them all morning from inside the house.

“Summer bachelors like summer breezes, are never as cool as they pretend to be.”

—Nora Ephron

Boys having fun showing off in the summer sun. Vince was in heaven watching these cars zip down Hwy 89. I grabbed these shots from my side of the car. Good thing I had run the car through the carwash. The photos are fairly spot-free if a little blurry.

“Summertime is always the best of what might be.”

—Charles Bowden

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”

—John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley: In Search of America

I looked at Geoff from Tangental’s garden and mine can’t even come close. So I shot macros of the few blossoms there are, then cropped them. LOL! We actually killed off many of my plants by overwatering.

Vince gets a little crazy with the hose. He’s used to California flowers planted in the ground dying for a drink. These poor guys are in pots and some of the pots were missing holes at the bottom. The good thing for our plants is that there is a screen around everything this year which keeps out the javelina and rabbits. They came by looking for treats, though!

“I love summertime more than anything else in the world. That is the only thing that gets me through the winter, knowing that summer is going to be there.”

—Jack McBrayer

“Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.”

— Al Bernstein

The birdhouse came from At Home where I went crazy this summer curating a beautiful patio landscape. It’s been so fun adorning my patio with summer colors. I don’t want it to end! These last two sets of doors make a colorful exhibit for Sylvia’s (My Colorful Expressions) Lens Artist door challenge. I hope you enjoyed the colorful array of summer colors in these posts. There isn’t just one summer color!!!

  18. These posts can be quite long (and I can’t believe I said that because I always hated when readers would say that to me with my long posts – ) but I expect your sections and flow and enjoy it completely when I get to read a Marsha post and take my time!
A bit long (compared to photo bloggers especially – ha) but never loquacious and with your good flow
    Okay – enough if that!

The Steinbeck quote was good and reminded me of when i could not get into that travels with Charlie book – blah!

    the new cushions are wonderful
Also had to smile about the overwatering and lessons we learn for a new area
And shouldn’t all garden pits automatically come with the holes –

    1. Yvette, we both like words, don’t we? Thanks for the kind words. Otherwise, why read Bleak House! WQW is more than a photo challenge. It is also a writing challenge and started as that more than a photo challenge. I lean more towards photography than writing, but it is open to those who prefer writing. We finished outfitting the three chairs today, so my patio looks well dressed! 🙂 Have a great Thursday. 🙂

      1. Oh I knew WQW was a writing challenge – and sorry if I made it sound like I didn’t know that –
And there are so many options for writers with that and even the word write is in the title of the challenge!

What I meant about photography bloggers is that some of the ones I follow were the ones that sometimes told me I had “long” posts (and many post a photo a day) – but then I also noticed that in my WP feed – for a little while – I had so many photo posts – they were quick to skip – and so when I came across a writing post it would feel long compared to those shorter posts (hope that made sense).

        1. Definitely. Terri writes a long photo blog, and I love every word. It’s like reading a letter from a friend. (Of course, she is a friend.) I love the short winded photo blogs, too, but the connection with a host is sometimes more when words are involved. It just depends, I guess on the connections we make.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Well I agree the connection happens more when some info is shared –
And some photo only bloggers wait for readers to ask questions –
But that leaves a lot to chance and leaves much interest out –
Oh and I like Terri’s Sunday stills post

You two have a similar style

            Liked by 1 person

          2. That’s true some bloggers do wait. I would guess that most bloggers would respond, “Gorgeous picture,” and not ask any questions.

  20. Beautiful cushions. In the market for some new ones for a beat-up wicker patio set we have on the balcony. I love paisley and I like the combination of warm and cool colors in these.

I read Miss Froggie but thought Miss Piggy. Had to go back up to see which was correct. She is a cutie. Love that she is reading. I have an elf reading a book that was my grandmother’s in my garden.

Great K.D. Lang quote/lyric. I think we all look a little healthier when we are sun-kissed.

    1. I agree that a little color looks good on us. My skin is quite pale, but years of getting a little sun has coupled with the AZ dryness to make some great wrinkles. 🙂

  23. Summer is in full swing if your post is any indication. All your photos and quotes are perfect, Marsha! I can’t wait to see your patio colors in person, it looks so fresh and inviting 😍 I’m not a fan of heat especially now that we are in the trailer in 90+ heat here at the delta. No electric to even run a fan. No wonder no one is here, just empty RVs. We drove Tuesday from Bend Oregon at 37F to the delta at 107F. Now I remember why we love Spokane. I posted on Facebook our summer colors so far: blue, brown, green and white.

    1. It’s 86 here today, but the clouds temper the heat. I think it is glorious. I hope it will be lovely still when you get here. It will be nice in SD.

I think it is so interesting that you added brown to your summer colors. Everything in our part of CA is brown, as it is here, but I see it as a neutral background and the colors of our flowers as the main colors of summer. But you are right, in the west, brown is the new green. 🙂

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Brown is the new green, lol, especially in California now. We got a bunch of clouds that rolled over the Sierras from the east today that indeed cooled the air down, for now. We’ll chat this week!

  24. Enjoyed the post, Marsha, but as I oddly enough just commented on another post, quotes exalting summer, the joys of being outside, etc, do NOT live in our part of Arizona. 🙂 Here we look forward to winter and the only things that can be killed by overwatering are cacti. The concert looks and sounds like fun. We have hummingbirds looking for nectar in our backyard and when I’m in Wyoming, I’ve had hummingbirds buzz me when I’m wearing a red(dish) shirt or sitting near our red cooler. Happy Wednesday.

    1. We had that same kind of summers in Central California. It is different here, for sure, but only by 20 degrees or so. We had a few dribbles of rain today and that does cool it down – not temperature-wise, but in the intensity of the sun. I’m looking forward to your visit here and Terri’s and my visit to the valley on July 7th. Happy Wednesday to you too, Janet. 🙂
