This week, as always, Dan looks for pictures of doors for his #Thursday Doors Challenge. Cee turned this week’s Fun Foto Challenge into a wonderful fountain of fotos for me at the Martin Auto Museum. I couldn’t wait for her challenge to finally publish!

Martin Auto Museum #4

Vince’s favorite car

“Peace, brother.” I’m not sure how the peace sign goes with a flaming red car. I love red cars and he doesn’t, so I was a bit shocked when he picked this out as his favorite! It was probably the bench seats. Bucket seats were a bad invention for teen boys just beginning to date.

Vince could hardly wait to climb into the first car we saw in the museum. As he reverently opened the door, he solemnly pointed out all the defining coolness characteristics. Suicide doors definitely made this car cool as did the brushed stainless steel roof.

The number and brightness of the lights in this museum make the reflections off these vehicles like seem like looking into a serene lake at high noon. The chrome of the door handles almost disappears into the sparkle.

Other cool parts of the Eldorado

What is your favorite part of the car? What makes it cool to you? As we drive down the road and Vince says, “That is such a beautiful car,” sometimes I think it looks like any other SUV. I have to ask him what makes it so different. For Vince, often coolness starts with the word aluminum.

How many parts of a car can you name? You might surprise yourself. Do you know the name of the pointed piece on the bumper?

plastic seat covers, chrome door handles, wing windows

I had to laugh at this one. Yes, the seats were perfectly protected, but my first husband had an aunt who had every piece of furniture in her living room covered with plastic. So inviting. The furniture went out of style before it even had a stain. Then she went into a nursing home. Her furniture probably went into a furniture museum. It was quite the fad.

Woody doors, fenders, and white wall tires

Woodies get my vote for the most beautiful doors. The polished wood shone almost as brightly as the chrome door handles.

Woody door, chrome handle, and split-bench front seats

I can’t imagine driving this car to the beach and ruining it with sand and salt air. Maybe this one had plastic door covers at the time.

Hammad’s Weekend Skies Last Weekend

We all hope that the Monsoon season will begin soon in Arizona. We have four major forest fires burning right now that I know about, three of which are six miles from Flagstaff and one near Tucson. We depend on the Monsoon season to bring us water.

Last weekend, I thought the clouds held the promise of rain. As you can see in the last picture, a few sprinkles were the extent of our precipitation.

The Pipeline Fire is currently 22,888 acres with 31% containment and the Haywire Fire is estimated at 5,065 acres with no containment. https://ein.az.gov/keywords/flagstaff.

As a comparison, here are the stats from Dan’s post about the Squire’s Tavern and People’s State Forest in Connecticut.

Peoples State Forest is a Connecticut state forest occupying 3,059 acres along the West Branch Farmington River opposite American Legion State Forest in the town of Barkhamsted.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s different take on #Thursday Doors, Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge – car parts, and Hammad’s Weekend Skies. Sorry, this is one of your old posts, Hammad. I couldn’t find the most recent.

  4. I remember visiting friends of my parents who encased their furniture in plastic. I am grateful that my parents never went in that direction. >grin<

    1. Mine did not either. Our house was not spotless, nor is our home now, though I work at keeping it nice. Plastic covers have never been part of the regime! 🙂

  5. Very nice car doors, Marsha. I like looking at antique and vintage cars too, even though I am not particularly interested in cars.

    1. I think of you as more of a carriage person. 🙂 Something more historical than a mere car. 🙂

      1. Haha, Marsha, I do like carriages too.

        1. Since you write histories, I think you have to know more about transportation in the past than current transportation – and that would include the recent past. Although when you move through time, that complicated things because you have to know so much more to make both time periods realistic. 🙂

          1. That is true, Marsha. I love research and history so I really enjoy finding out more about life in different eras.

  6. Beautiful photos of cars. My favorite part of a car is the brakes, followed by the steering wheel and the headlights. Stop, go, see clearly… the essence of driving!

    1. Those are all pretty essential, Ally, but I like to sit when I’m driving! 🙂

  8. Great post!! My ageing brain coughed up Jim Croce’s song, “Bad Bad Leroy Brown”–re the Eldorado! So sorry about the forest/wildfires–I don’t look forward to summer here in WA, as they cause a lot of damage. Sending up prayers for serious rain relief!

        1. I will be in Portland for about a week, then off to Spokane. 🙂 My first husband was from Seattle. His mom lived on Dayton Avenue N. near Greenwood. I had a hard time recognizing it the last time I went up there. The lot had been divided and a huge hous built in front of his parent’s home.

          2. I hope. Let me know if you want to come that direction and meet up with Terri and me. You’re only about 3.5 hours from Portland, too, aren’t you. We are going to try to meet several of us in Portland.

          3. Thanks for the invitation, Marsha–but I don’t drive, I’m pretty much homebound due to health issues. You gals have a great time!!😊

          4. I understand. I wish it was different. I would love to come up your way, but don’t have the family anymore, or the time away from home. My mother-in-law died in 2002, so I only went back to clear up estate issues.

          5. I understand too, Marsha. There’s only been one blogger I met in person, back in 2011–only because she lived very close in miles. However I met my best friend (like a sister) through our blogs, and then emailing. She’s in IL and cannot travel here because she has a special needs child–and I can’t go there. But we’re in daily contact through emails, and she has richly blessed my life. I’m sure you and I would hit it off too–and we can do that via the blogs 🙂

  11. Oh that’s funny, your weekend sky link was linked to my wordless Wednesday post, Marsha! But thanks, LOL! Love that red car Vince is sitting in! I remember the bench seat in certain cars and trucks BITD! I was really nervous on a date when I was 16 wondering if I should sit on my side or smack up against the driver. No seat belts, etc. Great images for Thursday Doors!!

  12. Love the cars, Marsha!! Where’s this museum? There was a museum in Cleveland that had lots of great old cars and even an airplane or two (small ones obviously.) I had to laugh at your comment about the plastic-covered furniture. A relative of my mom’s had all their living room furniture covered in plastic which, in the heat and humidity of Omaha (or the winter cold), would have been really uncomfortable. Fortunately, we children were relegated to the basement to play and not allowed to sit on it. I realize now what a good thing that was. 🙂

    1. What a funny story! I hated how sticky they were when you wore shorts! Then your legs had plastic marks for the next 20-30 minutes. 🙂

The museum is at 4320 W Thunderbird Road, Glendale, AZ 85306.
