Prescott has fascinating buildings downtown. The downtown is organized around Courthouse Square, one of the streets being Gurley. I think of Arnold Schwarzenegger every time I drive on it.
I’ve had my eye on three buildings since we moved here that have great doors. The first is a historic church on Gurley, the main street out of town to either Highway 89 that goes all the way to US Interstate 40 or 69 to Prescott Valley, AZ then off to Interstate 17 which goes south to Phoenix or north to Flagstaff.
I found a place to park and walked around to get some closer views.
As you come into town this is the view you would see as you look to the right. This actually was taken from the parking lot across the side street. Later you will see a close-up of the door behind the little tree in the middle of the picture.
I don’t like this one as much because I cut off the steeple. Getting good close-up pictures of buildings is an art, don’t you think. One of the best people I’ve met for doing this is Leanne Cole. Somehow her vast talent did not rub off on me.
Here is a close-up of the copper-coated front door which looks more beautiful when admired from a distance. It does not have a patina which makes me wonder if it is really copper, or if they clean it regularly. You can see the wrinkles at the top left and really all over the door, which tells you that it isn’t wood! Did Ted sign his name at the bottom? I didn’t notice that when I took the picture.
Another problem I have taking pictures no matter how much time I take to line up everything is getting things straight. After I take the picture, I use the Geometry section in Bridge to align everything. However, even Bridge has a hard time making all those angles line up properly.
Just so you know this is really a historic church, here’s the sign to prove it. You know me I can’t resist anything historic. Can you imagine how many buildings in the United States have received this plaque? Notice also that the building is brick. There was a huge fire in downtown Prescott in 1900, so residents learned their lesson well.
I thought I saw a sign saying that this was originally a First Baptist Church, but you can’t quote me on it because I didn’t take a picture of the proof. Now, however, it is a First Congregational Church.
