Dollars for Ukraine

Last week I stated that I would donate $1 for every like on my WQW post. I had 62 likes. Donna @ Retirement Reflections has a great post with lots of ways to donate. It is hard to know which organizations to trust. Since our church also raises money for the people in Ukraine, I chose to donate through that organization. Here is the receipt they sent me.

My Choices for Rain

Definition Rain: moisture condensed from the atmosphere that falls visibly in separate drops.

Seperate visible drops
From the atmosphere.

“The Sun after the rain is much beautiful than the Sun before the rain!”

― Mehmet Murat ildan

This quote sounds good, but is it true? It’s romantic to think that because water has a cleansing effect. In Central California, it is true because the unwashed air is so dusty. However, here in Prescott, times before the rain can be beautiful too.

“True, the sun and the wind inspire. But rain has an edge. Who, after all, dreams of dancing in dust? Or kissing in the bright sun?”

— Cynthia Barnett
Dream of dancing in the dust? Or kissing in the sun?

Without water – rain or irrigation – the earth is dangerous to our lungs and can no longer feed us. The Central Valley of California is one of the largest agricultural areas on the earth. Without rain, it looks bleak.

“Dance in the dust? Hmmm, let me think about that one. No, thanks. Kissing in the sunshine, definitely not! A little rain does a body good. It has an edge to it.”
Rainy day in Brisbane

“Rainy days should be spent at home with a cup of tea and a good book.”

— Bill Watterson

Right! Or better – standing in the cover of a building overhang with your mouth agape, amazed at how much is falling and how it doesn’t stop people from going about their business. These next pictures were taken on a summer day in Brisbane. It must be the rainy capitol of the world!

Or taking a river cruise in Brisbane, AU.

Urban Rain for Sunday Stills

“The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops. Eventually.”

– Eeyore

“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.”

— Langston Hughes
“No thanks. I’m not sleepy. I color my hair to keep the gray out, thank you very much. Keep your drops to yourself. I came to Hawaii for the sunshine. Rain, rain, go away until I’m back home.”

“You pray for rain, you got to deal with the mud too. That’s a part of it.”

– Denzel Washington

“And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow.”

– Gilbert K. Chesterton

Even though the Census Bureau classifies urban areas as having populations of 2,500 or more, there is nothing as fun as a small-town parade – even with a threat of rain.

  1. I remember that afternoon in Brisbane. One minute it was fine and the next minute down came the rain. It poured. But not for long! Happy memories.

    1. It was so fun to watch the people walking through it like nothing was going on upstairs! And we took the bus, too, didn’t we?

  2. can’t argue with Bill Waterson! and the best part of rain is the possibility of a rainbow…

    1. Never argue with Bill, no matter what his last name is. There is nothing like the joy and surprise of seeing a brilliant rainbow or three!

  3. Hi Marsha, a great post. I’ve never experienced a small town parade% we done have that sort of thing here.

    1. Small town parades are the best. You know folks in the parade, in the audience. You’ve probably helped build, paint, or finance one or more of the floats. Or maybe you even get to ride in the parade. I did that the year I was Woman of the Year in Woodlake. That was a kick!

      1. I am sure it would be a lot of fun. Different from my life in a big city. I don’t even know my neighbours.

        1. We are so lucky here that we do. It’s like being in a small town living in these condos. We made tons of friends with our neighbors in Woodlake. We had three of them visit us in the past month.

I hate those people who knock on your door and tell you how you need to be “saved” or you’ll “burn”. Stupid firemen.

  7. Call me weird but I love the rain. It makes for wonderful photography as well as a day off to do whatever needs doing at home. The skies are always dramatic before and after and Mother Earth definitely needs more of it! Fun post Marsha – loved the Hawaiian rain shot LOL.

    1. Thanks, Tina. Rain and I have a love/hate relationship. I love it, especially warm rain like Hawaii. But I hate the mugginess it causes. I love the green it makes, too. I don’t like cold dreary days piled like blankets on each other. I need some sunshine, too.

    2. Hi Tina. We’re called pluviophiles.😃
I love the rain. (Not constant though) The sound of it, the look of it and how it freshens everything.
Although, when it causes havoc like floods – mmm…not so nice!

  8. I love how a good rain clears everything up and makes the air smell so fresh. We had some wonderful rain a couple of days ago… loved it! Now, who knows when the next storm will come (fingers crossed).

    1. I love that, too, Janis. I hope it comes soon enough that the earth doesn’t crack from the dryness and long enough for you to enjoy sunshine and the earth to absorb what’s in it already. Rain that just sits on top of the surface because the water table is so high or the clay is so soaked, doesn’t do as much good.

    1. That was one of the more amazing rain storms I’ve watched. Not much lightening and thunder like in Indiana when I was a kid, but I wanted to get out there and play in it. I missed the people who were dancing in the rain, though. I remember that some of them did play around. Maybe my phone went dead, but they are still in my memory. 🙂

    1. Unfortunately, that was an all too common scene in the summer and fall. By summer we could no longer see the Sierra Nevada Mountains just 40 minutes driving time away. Here we can see the San Francisco Peak more than 100 miles away every day of the year. Granted the air is thinner in the mile-high city but it is cleaner.

  18. The watterson and Hughs quotes were my fav today and this post really covered rain in a fun way
-!- and the photo of the lady covering her head “& rain, rain, go away” was powerful
    ☔️🌦

    1. That lady was my friend, Elane, who was a child Holocaust survivor. I don’t remember why she was standing out there in the rain. She did not like being outdoors too much. She had flown to meet me in Hawaii for a week. Not too long after that her dementia had developed to a point where she could no longer travel and do the things she loved. So I was glad we had those days.

      1. Oh Marsha – how awesome to have such a dear friend – and too bad about dementia – ugh – that is a terrible affliction

        Liked by 1 person

        1. It was. I never saw her in the very last days of her life, but a mutual friend kept me informed and it wasn’t a good story. Eventually her son stepped in and realized the seriousness of her condition. My brother had a hard time realizing when Mom could no longer be left to her own devices and he was angry at me for intervening until he wised up. I think Elane’s son had the same issue.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. well we have a family friend down in Florida and her son just stepped up to intervene for her (similar, dementia and she just lost her driver’s license) – one more example of how it can take a while for folks to fully see the decline and take action

  24. On the dry side of Washington, we appreciate the rain when we get it, Marsha. We got a lot more snow in the mountains this winter and already more rainy days than early 2021. What a difference! I love your edgy urban shots of the rainy days, and even here, I watch people go about their business in any kind of weather. We former Californians are still afraid we might melt, LOL!

    1. I got myself into a lot of trouble living in Oregon because I never got over that. Rain in Indiana was warm and inviting. In Oregon it was cold and drizzly. I got into some cars I probably shouldn’t have to avoid being rained on. Luckily, back then, it was safer to do that and no harm came from it, but I wouldn’t advise it now. Better to melt. 🙂

I love your photos too. I’m sure I have more rain photos somewhere but didn’t have my hard drive with me to look. We were caught in thunderstorm when we were in NYC and had to run 2 blocks to our hotel….we laughed the whole time and made the best of it. Same with when we were in Italy.
