Why the World Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick was born in the 5th century in a Britain that was under occupation by the Romans and was kidnapped at the age of 16 and sent to Ireland as a slave.

During his period of enslavement, he spent his time as a shepherd lonely and afraid. During that time he turned to religion for comfort. Following his 200-mile escape to freedom, he spent a rigorous fifteen years in religious training.
As an educator, I found it remarkable that he integrated bits of Irish culture to teach them about Christianity. As writers, we can appreciate the value of his diaries. Only one other religious diarist was credited with recording more of their inmost thoughts than St. Patrick.

The date of the holiday marks the conflicted anniversary of his death recorded in different historical documents as being anywhere from 460-492, according to three sources I found. Since the first parade with 27 Irish immigrants in Boston celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in 1737, parades and green have come to represent pride in all things green and Irish. It became a public holiday in the United States in 1900.

How do you top that? Our worst days are so memorable and without something to remind us of the good times, we tend to let them slide by unnoticed. That is why I think taking stock at the end of the week or month is not bragging or complaining. It’s simply remembering the good times.

Celebrating the Best of Last Week
We had a busy time this past week with friends from California who came to visit us. We discovered some new shops, murals, and library services in downtown Prescott. If I had $1,800, I’d love to start my art collection with these two items from Van Gough’s Ear Fine Art Gallery.

We learned that every 4th Friday the Galleries of Prescott have an Art Walk with wine and goodies starting at 5:00 pm and ending at 8:00 pm. If you live in the area, you can check out the events at https://www.ArtThe4th.com.
Another Prescott Highlight
Another part of our “best day” that happened this week was being part of a magic show in Courthouse Square. Monica and I were enjoying the Courthouse Square ambiance. Suddenly, it seemed a crowd assembled around a man and his son who had started juggling and interacting with some small children and their parents.
The main performer spotted Monica and me standing away from the center of the action. Chatting constantly, he walked over to us, took off our sunglasses, and invited us to follow them. When we got to the spot he wanted us to stand, he held the sunglasses at just the right level and asked us to walk into them. We did and he proceeded with his show.
When he got to the part where he needed to choose additional helpers, one little girl hid behind her mom when he chose her. Not daunted, he picked a young mother whose son cried when she handed him to his father to hold. Finally, he found a young woman who had no children. He asked the woman to bring him Monica’s purse.
As soon as he had the purse in hand, he ran off, up the stairs of the Courthouse. (Not a wise move for a thief.)
“How else can we make any money?” he asked his audience. He got a burst of laughter.
No worries for those of you who were sure Monica would be missing her passport to go back to the distant country of California. He came back to astound us all by pulling his missing red handkerchief out of Monica’s purse.
