Why the World Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick was born in the 5th century in a Britain that was under occupation by the Romans and was kidnapped at the age of 16 and sent to Ireland as a slave.

The Scottsman

During his period of enslavement, he spent his time as a shepherd lonely and afraid. During that time he turned to religion for comfort. Following his 200-mile escape to freedom, he spent a rigorous fifteen years in religious training.

As an educator, I found it remarkable that he integrated bits of Irish culture to teach them about Christianity. As writers, we can appreciate the value of his diaries. Only one other religious diarist was credited with recording more of their inmost thoughts than St. Patrick.

“The moral and spiritual greatness of the man shines through every stumbling sentence of his ‘rustic’ Latin.”

D.A. Binchy, the most austerely critical of Patrician (i.e., of Patrick) scholars

The date of the holiday marks the conflicted anniversary of his death recorded in different historical documents as being anywhere from 460-492, according to three sources I found. Since the first parade with 27 Irish immigrants in Boston celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in 1737, parades and green have come to represent pride in all things green and Irish. It became a public holiday in the United States in 1900.

Green, the Easy Topic. Head Over to Terri’s Sunday Stills

“St. Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate our green heritage. The ancestry of Ireland. It is a day to celebrate what it means to be Irish and of Irish descent.”

Anthony T. Hicks

Terri has great quotes and photos for “green” and she’s not “jaded” about sharing them. So I’ll focus on the Luck of the Irish and St. Patrick’s Day with my quotes. See my list of inspiring challenges at the end of the post.

“May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future.”

Irish Blessing

How do you top that? Our worst days are so memorable and without something to remind us of the good times, we tend to let them slide by unnoticed. That is why I think taking stock at the end of the week or month is not bragging or complaining. It’s simply remembering the good times.

What was your best day so far this year? Maybe check out your photos or your wrap-up posts for answers to that question. Here are some of the challenges that help me identify my good days for the week or month.

My February Wrap-up

Celebrating the Best of Last Week

We had a busy time this past week with friends from California who came to visit us. We discovered some new shops, murals, and library services in downtown Prescott. If I had $1,800, I’d love to start my art collection with these two items from Van Gough’s Ear Fine Art Gallery.

The jade green background is compliments of Canva. The photos are taken with permission from the store owner with my iPhone 12s to post for Cell Pic Sunday

We learned that every 4th Friday the Galleries of Prescott have an Art Walk with wine and goodies starting at 5:00 pm and ending at 8:00 pm. If you live in the area, you can check out the events at https://www.ArtThe4th.com.

Another Prescott Highlight

Another part of our “best day” that happened this week was being part of a magic show in Courthouse Square. Monica and I were enjoying the Courthouse Square ambiance. Suddenly, it seemed a crowd assembled around a man and his son who had started juggling and interacting with some small children and their parents.

The main performer spotted Monica and me standing away from the center of the action. Chatting constantly, he walked over to us, took off our sunglasses, and invited us to follow them. When we got to the spot he wanted us to stand, he held the sunglasses at just the right level and asked us to walk into them. We did and he proceeded with his show.

When he got to the part where he needed to choose additional helpers, one little girl hid behind her mom when he chose her. Not daunted, he picked a young mother whose son cried when she handed him to his father to hold. Finally, he found a young woman who had no children. He asked the woman to bring him Monica’s purse.

As soon as he had the purse in hand, he ran off, up the stairs of the Courthouse. (Not a wise move for a thief.)

“How else can we make any money?” he asked his audience. He got a burst of laughter.

No worries for those of you who were sure Monica would be missing her passport to go back to the distant country of California. He came back to astound us all by pulling his missing red handkerchief out of Monica’s purse.

Relief! It worked. And that was the best day of the trip until the next day. 🙂

“May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow. And may trouble avoid you wherever you go.”

        1. LOL. You can always link an old post, not that you have to, of course. Another one of my friends does that regularly. He writes his posts and when he reads a challenge that fits his post, he links. It works for him. I’m not that ambitious usually. 7. St Pat’s Day is celebrated much more in Singapore than one would think! For one, all the Irish pubs here used to have a big to-do … unfortunately, our pubs have not had approval to resume custom. But from social media posts, many did still manage to celebrate in some form.

I wanted to back a loaf of soda bread … didn’t get around to it though. So I only commemorated in thought 🙂

The Magic Show display at Courthouse Square looked so much fun: colourful, exciting, and all in sunny weather!

    1. A friend brought some soda bread and some Irish cheese to a neighborhood get together we had last week as well. I should have taken a picture for you! It was delicious. The cheese looked a little scary but was fabulous. 🙂 Prescott has sunny days like yesterday and the day of the magic show, and days like today that are a little gloomier, then snow days, monsoon days in the summer. It’s a weather display case!

      1. Your weather is so exciting! I didn’t realise it snowed in AZ!!!! or is it just in Prescott? My sister lives near Phoenix and I don’t think she’s ever reported snow.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. It snows in northern AZ. Flagstaff gets the most snow because of the altitude. Prescott is the other mile-high city besides Denver in the US. We are at about 5,300 feet above sea level, whereas the valley – Phoenix is at about 200-300 feet above sea level.

  16. Hi Marsha. As an Irish woman, I’m thrilled that you chose the Irish green for this week’s WQW. Very fitting for my St Patrick’s Day post about shamrocks and leprechauns. The history of St Patrick and the way he used the three leaves of the shamrock to teach about the Holy Spirit, is interesting.
I love that St Patrick’s Day is so prominently celebrated in America. I believe the parades in New York are amazing!
There are hundreds of Irish quotes and blessings to choose from. We are generally quite a happy bunch, and optimistic too.
The magic show in Prescott looked like fun. I really thought at first that he was a thief! Good story!
I love that green car in the slide show.
