IT’S EASY TO PLAY ALONG WITH #WQWWC

This weekly writing challenge runs from Wednesday through Tuesday. The only rule is to use a quote.

If you want to participate, create a pingback to link your post. Not sure how to do that? See how to create pingbacks here. Be sure to link to the most recent post not my page. I don’t see links to my page. 🙂

Don’t just read the communication quotes and close the browser tab. Pick out one or two that speak to you and try incorporating the lessons in your daily life. You’ll start seeing the results of better communication sooner rather than later.

My Communication to You

As you may know me by now, I try to keep to a schedule for my blogging, at least my challenges. Cee has been taking care of PPAC, Photographing Public Art Challenge while I’m healing.

On Tuesday night after writing this post, but before scheduling it, I woke up at one in the morning and my left leg (my injured pickleball leg) hurt. I got up and it was swollen to about twice its size. After icing it all night, there was no change.

We went to the doctor as soon as we could and he sent me for an ultra sound. Long story short, I have blood clots up and down my left leg. The hospital ran another test, this time on my lungs, and sure enough, I have a bunch there too. Who knows why I’m still alive? Later they found that I also have pneumonia.

I got out of the hospital on Saturday, still puffy, still with tons of clots, but I’m on blood thinners, so that is supposed to neutralize them. Tomorrow I see a specialist in treating deep vein thrombosis, so I’m excited that he can make a difference for me. It was his lovely communication while I was in the hospital that made the difference.

To have good communication skills means you are able to make your point without a lot of fillers and stumbling.

– Gregory Davidson

He wanted to treat the clots the next day in his office so I didn’t have to go on blood thinners the rest of my life. When the hospital found clots in my lungs, the doctors kept me there. This was his text to me when I texted him I was staying in the hospital overnight at least.

“Ok let me know when u leave. I’m glad u r ok. We will take care of u after.”

Dr. Ayad Agha, Scottsdale, AZ

This is a doctor who has not met me, but apparently was moved when his scheduling clerk called him about my situation. There was a long stream of communication from him, and I can’t tell you how safe he made both my husband and I feel.

Communication – What’s That Again?

KIndness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.

Mark Twain

At our house we are dealing with hearing loss. This puts an incredible strain on the communication between spouses and children and parents. Our best communication during recent years happened during moving when we sat down with a notebook between us and made to do lists. That really helped our communication.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

– George Bernard Shaw

The key is to check, check, check. If your hard of hearing spouse says he heard you, then check for understanding. What did you hear me say? This might be necessary with everyone.

The two words ‘information’ and ‘communication’ are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through.”

Famous Woodlaker, Carl Peden, flew Air Force One for four Presidents. He made a big contribution to the Woodlake Museum.

This amazing man called me and ASKED if he could come and be a speaker at the opening of the museum. He held us spell bound with his stories. He died two days later, I think it was President’s Day. I will never forget Mr. Peden’s communication.

There are so many ways to take this topic. My brain is mush, so this is all I can come up with on the run.

  • How to communicate
  • Body language
  • Words when there is no body language
  • History of communication
  • Timing of communication

My Take-Away for Communication

Mark Twain nailed it. Kindness is what we both need to practice 24/7.

Thanks for joining in this week. I’ll be taking off two weeks to recover, so feel free to continue with this rich prompt for three weeks.

Love you all and thanks for your communication! I will participate in your challenges as I feel well.

  1. That must have been an unnerving incident but thankfully you got medical attention, and hope you are much better right now. Sending well wishes your way and please take care, Marsha.

It was very creative of you to tie in the theme of communication to your recent experience. Agree with many of the quotes. Good communication is where you can express yourself freely and get your point across. I like that you make to do lists at home to help your household overcome communication challenges as a result of hearing loss. To-do lists can be so helpful, and lists in general can help you break down what you want to say especially if you have many thoughts in your mind.

    1. Thanks for your lovely comments today, Mabel. I am a list maniac! Right now I’m charting when I drink water to make sure I drink enough each day. I’m charting my weight because I’m losing quite a bit quickly. I probably had 4 pounds of water weight in my leg. I chart who I should call. I chart my posts for the month. All random stuff. My journal is a mess, but for the period of time it is in use, it is my lifeline. 🙂 It sounds like you have experience with journals, too, my friend.

      1. That’s brilliant you are charting to drink water. Staying hydrated is so important. It’s great you are writing random things down and having random lists. You can always look back, read something you’ve forgotten and glad you wrote it down 🙂

        1. That’s so true. Until my journal runs out, I go back and reread the entries every so often. Then when I change journals, I copy important information from one to the next. If you ever want to do a guest post on journaling for me, that’s one of my passions.

          1. When I re-read journal entries, I often see how far I have come, or come to realise there are still things I need to revisit and work on. Journaling can be so insightful. Maybe one day I will do a guest post when the time is right 😊 Hope you are having a good weekend, Marsha.

  22. I’m reading this after I got your text message, my dear friend ❤ What a thing to be going through! I'm so glad the problem was identified and treatment was immediate. DVT is nothing to mess with or delay and obviously, the docs knew this and hospitalized you. You're a fighter and will heal quickly. I appreciate that you shared your story here and that it communicates how important visiting the doctor is when vague symptoms arise. I blame this pandemic and the hoopla for the medical delays as a result of the "is it covid, or not" mentality. Illnesses will continue to plague us and every one of them is worth the trouble to deal with. Be safe and let yourself get well. Glad you are taking a break. Say hi to V for us, I'm sure he is taking great care of you!
