This week we are going to explore your favorite vacations, whether they are just in the planning or happened years ago. Vacations can take place any where in the world at any time, but in my childhood at least, most of them happened in the summer. In retirement in a place like Prescott, AZ, almost every day is a vacation.

a Zombie Van at a Prescott Car Show ready to go on vacay.

Someone once said, if nothing bad happens on a vacation, you won’t remember it. Is that true in your life, or do you remember the good ones? I remember the ones where I take pictures. If I forget to pull out my camera, the vacation blurs into all the other great moments of life. And sometimes they blur on the digital camera, too. 🙂

What about when people come to see you? I count that as a vacation. We stop everything and play – do what our company would most enjoy and we enjoy it too.

Do vacations have to be with other people? I took a vacation once in our trailer to do NanNoWriMo and start my book. It was odd having my time completely to myself to write, take walks, stay up late or sleep in the middle of the day. I got my 50,000 words written and I was ready to go home! 🙂

  4. Wow, look at all the comments about this post and quotes and vacations!! I created an illustration on an index card for #icad (Index Card a Day) using the word vacation and the following quote:
“Don’t wait for a vacation to enjoy life. Start to enjoy it now, today, wherever you are.” ~ Debasish Mridha

That Zombie van is kind of quaint. I would love to rent an RV with perhaps a few more comforts of home for a weekend getaway.

  8. Marsha, my favorite ‘vacation’ was a cruise to the South Pacific some years back. All of the islands we visited were beautiful, but our experiences at Bora Bora and the incomparable beauty of Fanning Island made this trip a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. I don’t think I have ever felt so free, so alive and so at peace with my surroundings as I did in those waters. It is the kind of place that leaves you breathless and smiling with deep satisfaction at the end of the day.

  12. We normally go to a favourite place in Italy every year, and my favourite holiday memory there is from 2016 when we took my parents there as a gift from us to celebrate their 70th birthdays. I was very busy during that trip to organise good day trips and find a good restaurant to eat on my mother’s birthday. These Italy trips when we have other people with us are always quite exhausting because I have to be ready all the time as translator, interpreter, organiser, project leader of sorts, because I’m the only one of us who speaks Italian. But they’re still very enjoyable trips and I love the area and the people there. That particular trip was lovely because we could show my parents all these places that we love, and they still talk about it and think about it!

    1. You are so kind to perform all those functions to give your parents the time of their lives. My first husband and I went to Italy when our friends were stationed in Brindisi. They had learned Italian, and made such great tour guides. They planned the entire vacation first to Greece because my husband wanted to see that, and we took a ferry across there and then a bus into Athens. Then we came back to our friends and went to Venice, Florence and Rome – a trip of a lifetime! Thanks for sharing your story, Susanne. 🙂

    1. That’s very good. How are you. I think we have both gotten busy, but I was thinking about you this morning. Would you be interested in writing a short story for Story Chat? You tell such fabulous stories and you have a ton of 99 word stories just waiting to be expanded. 🙂

      1. Thank you for your invitation, Marsha. I’d be honoured to write a story for Story Chat. I’d feel a bit of a charlatan though, as I don’t often get over to read. Things are pretty hectic for me at the moment, so I’ll decline for the next couple of months while I get a big job out of the way. If the invitation is still open after that, perhaps we can chat then.

        1. Sounds good, Norah. You are never a charlatan. We are all busy with many things. The invitation will be open. I don’t get around to all the blogs I want to visit either. It is just part of life. 🙂

    1. LOL, John. Terri Webster Schrandt and I were just discussing that. I don’t think we are going anywhere this summer because this is our first summer here, and we are still on vacation here. 🙂 Have a wonderful time in CO. Where are you headed in CO? We used to live in Colorado Springs and loved it. There are so many places to visit in CO.

  24. I feel like I’m on vacation all the time these days–oh yeah, what’s that word—retirement? Woohoo! I love that you hid in your RV to work on your writing, Marsha! Hans is driving to Sacramento tomorrow morning for perhaps a week to pick up a load of stuff from our storage unit and windsurf at the delta for a couple of days. I am planning to work on both of my books–updating my Blogging With Photography book and edit/rewrite my fitness book. It will be like a writer’s retreat! Once again, our themes are compatible, as I am posting about the great outdoors, where most of my vacations take place.

  27. Okay – I have one that I think would be a fun read for everyone. For our 10 wedding anniversary, my wife and I did something we wanted to do before having kids. We did a miniature grand tour of Europe. The story of this trip accidentally became memorable but I’m going to hold the quote to the end of the story so I don’t blow the surprise. I think you’ll find this 10 minute read fun and important enough that you’ll be glad you read it. It tells the story of how we accidentally became part of one of the most important events in modern history.
