For Writer’s Quotes Wednesdays Writing Challenge for the past weeks we have discussed topics that add to our well-being – nutrition, hope, faith, exercise. Starting this month we are going to switch to a new series of topics that are more seasonal. We start with summer. Check out my page for the rest of the month. So much has changed since the Summer of 2020 as we tiptoe past the restrictions of COVID 19.

“One benefit of Summer was that each day we had more light to read by.”

― Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle

Remember to join in #WQWWC, the only rule is that you must include a quote in your post. Respond any way you want. Make a meme, write a story, philosophize for 2,000 words, or write a Haiku with 8 syllables.

My #WQWWC Post for Summer

First Summer in Prescott, AZ

Here in Prescott, it seemed that summer would never get here. Suddenly, the nineties have arrived, leaves are fully out, gardens planted in pots to keep the rabbits away, neighbors stop to visit as they go in and out, kayaks are loaded onto car roofs, bikes onto bike racks, pickleball abounds from 7:30 to 9:30 am, then comes to an abrupt end as people head to the pool. Prescott draws adults escaping the Phoenix and Tucson heat to play in one of our four lakes, and hike on our mountain trails. It’s Disneyland for adults.

Sadly for me, most of you don’t live in Prescott, AZ. This is your chance to tell what’s going on in your world. Or are you leaving your world to take a vacation? Maybe your world is upside down from mine and you are in the deep throes of winter. You’re going to have to dig into your archives and remember the warmer days.

“Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.”

Wonderful Summer Remembered

June – a Time to Learn New Skills

Lady Lee Manilla introduced me to a new form of poetry, and I wanted to try it on you this week.

Dress for Joy in Summer

Dress for joy in summer
shorts and t-shirts, not sweats
swimming suits, flip flops, hats
scarves, coats, boots, socks all packed
sunscreen, Off - spray for gnats

Dress for joy in summer
smiles and laughs, not frowns
face scrunched up with giggles
snorkels, kayak, paddles,
crayons, book of scribbles

Dress for joy in summer
trikes, bikes, scooters, skateboards
walking sticks for hiking
roller blades and knee pads
helmet fit for biking

  6. Hi Marsha, “The Glass Castle” was one of my favourite books. I appreciate the quote you share. It is interesting to learn how Arizona has diverse areas. Your description of Prescott, the lakes and areas to play is enticing. A great phrase “Disneyland for adults.” You also remind me of friends that are in the throes of Winter (upside down).

This is the first time I have heard of this style of poem. Your poem is great, Marsha! We have been off the grid camping on the West Coast. It turned into more of an adventure than we had planned. Ultimately fun. Thank you for your kind and generous spirit sharing new blogs for me to visit. 🙂

  8. Love your summer quotes Marsha , especially the one that says more light to read . Except the heat here makes you curl around quite like your cat and sleep. Prescott sounds lovely and your poem too conjured beautiful images of a fun summer. Finally, thank you for the shoutout. Much appreciate it.

  17. This is the perfect day to read about summer, because here it is icy cold today. A huge Antarctic polar blast has moved north, freezing the southern states and sending a frigid wind our way here in Queensland. It’s not usual for it to be so cold here and they are even predicting light snow down on the border. Brrrr. So I’ll enjoy your warm weather photos. Your tomato looks okay to me.

    1. I’m so sorry. That’s how our winter was Las year. Long timers said it was the worst winter in 25 years. I hope next winter will be better. At least your house is cozy and you have lots of lovely blankets!!! I’ll be thinking warm thoughts. Wish you were here. It’s perfect right now.

      1. The good news for us is that the cold weather will only last a couple of days and then we’ll be back to our normal winter days of maximums around 20 degrees, which is about 75 for you. Perfection. Can’t say the same for the southern states. They have winter for months on end. 🙂

  22. I had to chuckle at how everything stops after 9:30 as the heat rises. I’ve never been a huge fan of deserts, especially after my mom complained endlessly on our roadtrips to Yosemite as we drove the back roads of 395 from San Diego. After hours in the heat in 1970s AC, we would arrive to Tuolumne Meadows via the Tioga pass inhaling the cool pine scented air at 9500 feet elevation. Now you know why I live in the pine forests of Washington, Marsha, lol! What a cool new poem, even I could get into that! Thanks for your inspiration. You even have all your prompts for the year!

    1. Great. I’d love to read it. Don’t forget to mention #WQWWC, and find a great summer quote or feel free to use one of mine. Have a great summer week, Frank. You really should visit the West Coast beach. My favorite is Avila Beach in CA – not too crowded, nice restaurants and a few shops, beautiful beach, no dogs between 10:00 – 5:00, warm, but not hot all year long, (kind of a micro climate) You would love a summer week here as a relief from the hot muggy weather of the Midwest. 🙂
