Bird Weekly: Dipping Birds in the Selective Color Processing Bath Using PS Elements
Today Lisa from Bird Weekly challenge truly challenges our skills in converting color pictures to black and white with a dab of color. I have Photoshop Elements 15, one of the older versions you can buy, but still does more than a lot of people give it credit for doing.

The second picture was edited in the guided portion of Photoshop Elements called Black and White Selection. You can add or subtract color. After I subtracted all the color, I added a gold filter in the expert section and flattened the image.
Straight Black under the Enhance section. This takes 1 second at the max! 🙂

Well done – like me you’ve learned a new PS Elements technique thanks to Lisa and your finished photo is very effective. By the way, I have version 12 of Elements and I still get along just fine with it 🙂 I’m reluctant to upgrade because it would mean paying a monthly subscription whereas this was a one-off purchase!
Hi Sarah, that’s exactly right! I think I had Elements 12, on my old Apple computer that died, and I didn’t know how to get it back. I was fortunate to have written down my serial number or whatever was needed for Adobe to let me download it to my new computer when we spilled coffee on my next computer. It really is a one-time purchase. I loved your comment on Amanda and Sandy’s interview. You are such an encouraging as well as a talented person, my friend. 🙂
Thanks, Cee. There were two ways to do it in the Guided part of Elements. I wasn’t crazy about how the first one came out so I didn’t publish it, and I was in a hurry, so I didn’t redo it either. Even though it took me less than five or ten minutes, it is not as easy as watching you make changes using Bridge.
I can turn everythig black and white but that’s about it! I have Gimp, which I’m sure does loads of things I’d like to do with pics, but I don’t even understand the terms in the user manual. 😦
Cathy, I’m laughing to myself. OMG I get that. The terminology is irritating. It’s all English. You know the words, but they don’t make sense. This is a vent post I did years ago about creating a landing page. The whole problem is vocabulary. I have a new camera. I struggle with manuals. I’m on p. 23.
I’ll check it out. I did see how I could turn a photo black and white on my iPhone, but not how I could save it as a different file or how I could do a pop of color.
I’m not sure Snapseed does the singular pop of color, but I bet there is a way to do it. Turning a photo b&w is better in Snapseed. I’m going to have to check ps elements to see how to do a pop of color.

I don’t use my iPhone as much as I could, I’m sure. I just checked out the filters on iPhone. Pretty cool! 🙂
