Las Vegas Building Walk #2

“The success of a holiday depends on what you find for yourself on the spot, not what you bring with you.”

Ellis Peters

So many wonderful entries have already been submitted for the Lens Artist Photo Challenge #148 this week. Leya suggested that we try spots and dots. I found way too many examples of hot spots and dots on the Las Vegas Strip.

From where we stood at the Aria we hardly had to move before we started seeing spots and dots. I made my own spot with my flash shooting out the tenth floor window of our hotel room.

Random spots and dots

It has always bothered me somewhat that in the hot desert spot of Las Vegas you find so many water fountains. I love them, but maybe that’s part of the Sin City’s sin. Or maybe they are trying to make clouds.

We came outside a couple of times on our Las Vegas Walk. The first time out, the entry way ceiling dots captured my attention. Twilight was the perfect time for spots both on the ceiling and on the ground.

Walking across the street via the skywalk, Vince and I found some ground dots in this photo for Cee’s Tuesday Fun Foto Challenge: Color v Black & White. My main interest was the statue. I think it was an eraser – my favorite tool, and it’s round. There’s even a wisp of a ghost in the photo. Don’t ask me where he came from or why.

The ghost is trying to connect the dots, but is frustrated because they are random.

I was sort of disappointed that I didn’t have anything with polka dots for this week’s challenge. Then it hit me, we saw something very uniquely covered with dots. I found this old bird the Bellagio Giardini, a shop next to the Bellagio Gardens.

Have you ever seen a more elegant bird? Even though she’s new, I think she’s an old bird, but well preserved, don’t you think. Here’s my reasoning. Would a child dress like that? Probably not unless she was royalty and her mother made her. Few young adults could afford her attire. Her haughty expression reminds me of any dowager character in my mom’s collection of romance novels. Her dots and spots will almost blind you. Are you ready for details?

I’m late in submitting for her Tanka Tuesday Challenge #226 and I’m using my photos rather than hers. I’m hoping these short poems strung together by beads of pearls and are an example of Ekphrastic Poetry. You can check up on my poems to see if they meet the requirements by clicking on the links.

When you write poetry based on a painting or photograph, we work with symbolism and metaphors. This week, don’t just describe what you see in the image. Check out How to Write Ekphrastic Poetry and apply some of the techniques used in the article to your own poem.

On another note, Colleen Chesebro has a new book out about poetry which I purchased today for $2.99 for the Kindle version.

I hope you enjoyed this brief walk down the spotted and dotted Las Vegas Strip. The great thing was that I had fun without spending a dime except on the hotel room and food. The room was highly discounted. The food was not.

    1. Thank you so much, Sue. I had a lot of fun taking the pictures, then it’s a process waiting for the right challenge to come up to tell the story.

      1. Very true. I have enjoyed the Lens Artists Challenges for the last few years, but I don’t always participate if the prompt doesn’t ‘chime’ with me…

        1. I don’t always have time. I’m usually at the end of the heap so I’ve visited several other participants and gotten ideas. I love their challenges, though even if I don’t participate. 🙂

  4. I guess one of the benefits of these challneges is that it makes you be more observant of your environment…

  5. Wow Marsha – that bird is quite something! Haven’t seen anything quite that splendid in a long time. Why am I not surprised she’s in vegas?!

    1. LOL She’s right where she belongs, isn’t she? I don’t think she’d do well in your swamps. Her beads would droop. 🙂

      1. LOL, she’d be quite the star tho!

        1. Yes, she’d be that, Tina. 🙂 She needs her own show. She had to share the limelight with an equally gorgeous peacock.

    1. I’m trying to kill several birds with one stone. I want to try to keep my topics together under one name like this one is Las Vegas Buildings Walk. Others are Prescott Walks, That way my tags are all consistent. If I do a ton of subjects for one photo challenge, I might meet the requirements of the photo challenge, but there is no consistency on my blog in case I want to use a picture again or find a post. I will never remember that LAPC #148 is my post about Las Vegas buildings or the fancy bird. So that’s my newest thing, John. What’s yours?

      1. I understand. I don’t have good luck finding photos in challenges, for sure. I try to choose images that are already in my media center as then I can find them easier. The ones I lose track of are those that I found specifically for a challenge. I have a bigger issue with those Cellpic Sunday images as they are typically stand-alone. I recently started tagging them specifically.

        1. Welcome to my world John! LOL. In WordPress, if you write in a description, alt text, title, or caption, it will use those key words to find your pictures. When I name and tag my original pictures I have the date and the place, I think that’s what you do too. In the details I add things like color, objects, people’s names. Then the last thing I do

          1. Anytime. Just send a note. 🙂 I still use Snipping Tool on my Windows machine for capturing screens.

          2. I don’t know that but I found out if I use alt, Windows and shift together, it works. And it created a screen shot folder. Yay! We’re on our way to Scottsdale today, so I’ll email you when we get home. It’s SUPER windy in Prescott these last 3 days! 50 mph!!

            Liked by 1 person

          3. I think that’s the new tool replacing the Snipping Tool. I’ve used it a few times but prefer the older tool (at least until they take it away. 🙂 )
Have fun in Scottsdale! Cool here in Fargo, about 60 degrees today.

          4. That’s about the same as Prescott. Temp is 77 on the freeway. You won’t miss this. We’re going 0-5 mph on the 17 South right now!

    1. I hope you do. We only live 3.5 hours away since we moved. Last year we went just before COVID hit. It was so weird. I was going up stairs, and my husband said, “Don’t touch those rails. You don’t know who’s been touching them and might be sick.” That was in February of last year. He had never said that to me before. I kept my hands off the rails and never got sick. It was good exercise, too. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Willow. After I read the link on that kind of poetry (I can’t spell it without looking) I was actually pleased that it discussed the photo without actually describing it too much. I am still confused between Haiku and Cinquain. Since Haiku is more about nature it’s a bit of a stretch to call a sequined bird statue part of nature when she’s really the opposite. 🙂

      1. The beautiful bird represents nature and your Haiku are really good. A Cinquain is a five line stanza and much more disciplined than a Haiku. 💜💜

        1. Okay. I thought it was simply 5-7-5. I think that’s what I taught in fourth grade. That’s what most of my poetry is like.

          Like

          1. Ah! 5-7-5 and 3-5-3 are both Haiku, the 3-5-3 are so much more succinct 💜

    1. There you go, Jo. I think that’s exactly what I did. It felt good, too! 🙂 LOL! I wasn’t super pleased with my dots even though they were dots in my building pictures. There was too much else going on. But when I read someone else’s post about pearls, it was like a light went off. I felt pretty darn good about that bird! 🙂 LOL and a little twitch! 🙂
