When I read Lisa’s theme for this week, birds perched, I knew I had some Australian beauties to contribute. I thought about waiting until my theme of beauty posts on Writer’s Quotes Wednesdays. Maybe this will prime your pump as you think about beauty. Feel free to borrow the quotes.

Be as a bird perched on a frail branch that she feels bending beneath her, still she sings away all the same, knowing she has wings.

Victor Hugo

Give food to the birds, you will then be surrounded by the wings of love, you will be encompassed by the joys of little silent hearts!

The galah, pink and grey cockatoo, rose-breasted cockatoo,

No Silent Hearts Here

Carol says these pink and gray cockatoos, galahs, are never quiet. They are a popular pet, but Carol did not seem to be a fan of theirs. She did not elaborate, so you can draw your own conclusions.

Galah means “noisy idiot.” But they are quite smart, and if you want a companion, they can learn to talk. Like some humans, they don’t like cuddling, but love conversation. Of course the brown eyed birds – the males – have more to say than their pink-eyed companions.

Galahs like your habitat, too, especially gardens and ponds. However, if you work 60 hours a week and don’t have time to visit, they get destructive, and even self-mutilating, so consider the consequences. On the upside, they are healthier than most cockatoos, but they do get fat.

Their favorite foods are leafy salads with fruit and zucchini in them and bird pellets. NOTE: This makes them fat? Fair warning all dieters out there living on salads!

They love a treat of fattening walnuts. So that they keep their trim figures, a pet galah need to play outside the cage three to four hours a day with their wooden or leather toys or destroying your garden.

So what do you think? Are you going to get a galah for a pet?

I love seeing galahs in the wild. They are such characterful birds. But I don’t like seeing them caged or kept as pets. They’re meant to live in large groups out in the bush.

I’m not a super pet bird person either, Carol. That’s a very good point. I don’t think people are tempted to keep birds as pets like the ones we see in CA or AZ because who wants a plain brown quail or road runner, or a vulture? Cute little galahs that talk to you would be much more tempting. to try to keep as a pet.

I hope people don’t buy them as pets because they’re not meant to be caged. I’m not at all into keeping birds caged up.

Nice photos and wonderful information if someone is considering on getting one for a pet. They are also a long-term commitment like parrots. Galahs have a lifespan in captivity of up to 40 years. 🙂

Those gallahs took me back to a swimming pool at a guest farm in the Northern Territory – a refreshing swim after a long drive and gallahs, very exotic to our newly-arrived UK eyes, screeching overhead!

Thanks, Donna. I love doing it. I work hard at the processing. That was a special blogging vacation with my blogging friends in Australia. Leanne Cole in Melbourne planned a huge trip to Healseville Sanctuary in Melbourne with another blogging friend and another photographer. It was great fun, and I learned a lot mostly from watching what they did. 🙂

Oh, those bird photos are amazing! I am an avid birder. I would love to go birding in Australia. Every bird would be a life record for me. So exotic! Those galahs do sound like some people I know…:)

LOL, Laurie. I’m sorry! My dad was like a galah. He started speaking before he opened his eyes in the morning.
