This week our topic for Writer’s Quotes Wednesday’s Challenge #17 is Leisure. Check out my page for more information.

To participate, find a quote about leisure, write a post, put a link to this post somewhere in your post. It doesn’t hurt to leave me a link in the comment section either because sometimes I don’t get notification about your post.

How Bloggers Spend Leisure Time

People spend their precious leisure doing many useful and enjoyable activities. Blogging is my hobby of choice right now, which encompasses any hobby. I’ve met bloggers who love horsemanship, reading, writing, travel, cooking, skiing, uphill slogging, walking/running, hiking, stretching/Yoga, cartooning, and I’m sure you can add so many more. How many leisure activities can you list?

How about Dancing?

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.”

Martha Graham

What about games?

We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.

 Benjamin Franklin

My dad and I used to play chess. My mother and her parents played bridge. My husband and I love card games, too. Our favorite is pinochle. What games do you and your family enjoy in your leisure time?

Photography Anyone?

When I think of leisure my first thoughts go to Terri Webster Schrandt who writes her blog “Second Wind Leisure” and hosts #Sunday Stills. Any leisure photographers out there?

“We all need empty hours in our lives or we will have no time to create or dream.”

Robert Cole

My new friend Lisa Coleman challenges her followers to take pictures of birds from her blog, Our Eyes Open. Challenge #39 is birds that eat fish. Here are some birds photographed for her challenge.

Travelers or Trekkies?

With the availability of the vaccine, we all hope that traveling will soon open up. One of my favorite travel photographer, Tina Schell, of the Lens Artists Photo Challenges reminds us in LAPC Challenge #139 that life is full of special moments. I found this next quote on her post.

“Life is not made up of minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, or years, but of moments. ”

Sarah Breathnach

One of the most special moments in my leisure life was a trip to Australia, where I met two of my favorite bloggers, Carol and Leanne and many of their friends. They nearly wore me out taking pictures. But I saw incredible sights like this Australian indigenous man playing the digeridoo, a very unusual experience.

Do you love to spend leisure moments traveling?

“Organizing your leisure effectively is the highest level of civilization.”

Bertrand Russell

How to Create a #WQWWC Post

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your participation in the Writer’s Quotes Wednesday Writing Challenge. It takes effort to look up quotes and then think about what to do with those quotes. A couple of weeks ago a friend suggested that I drop the challenge if no one participated in a month. I’ve decided to keep going for a while. The challenge is starting to grown on me. These three woman keep me going.

If it is easier for you, write your quote in the comment box with your poem, opinion, picture, or other response. I will visit your blog either way.

  4. I appreciate this challenge very much, Marsha. This was yet another great edition- the “dancing in the moonlight” is exactly what I’ve been getting up to lately. 😉 That and moving efforts. And kayaking with monkeys. Keenly relate to the leisure of travel and adventure. Planning a trip North, soon, to scout for a new abode. OH is that going to be wonderful to be able to hit the road again! Sir got his first vaccination just this week. Saw you got yours already- too groovy. Hugs! Meanwhile, fantastic quotes. Nice bit o’ Bertrand Russell, I see.

            Liked by 1 person

          2. HAHAHA yez 😉 Wherever I go, rain, bugs, swamps and toads pour down- always be prepared, like bear grissom. I’ve never been to DizzyWorld btw- and yet, I have a perfect picture in my mind of what these hot, semi-transparent, overly-fluttery, platicky things must look like. Hmm…”Singing in the Rain” is also starting to simper into the cartoon playing in my head now. You’re also wearing a large Paddington Bear hat, do they sell those too? Are they rainbow coloured? Your dance looks like something out of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat now. Sigh, cats are distracting me again, must whoosh before editing away most of this. I suspect it’s a shambling bog of blather. Again. Blast. And cheers 😉 -toad-lips

          3. If you want to see a funny dance, you should read Tish Farrell’s short post for Becky B’s BrightSquare. Here’s a link to her blog. It’s too cute. Not singing in the rain cute, but cute. http://tishfarrell.wordpress.com/ You might want to watch her video with some platicky things. 🙂

          4. Marsha, I loved this IMMENSELY. Thank you. Tish Farrell’s blog is a delight. Always enjoy the bit of dancing on the cliff-edge right at the end in the video there, perfeeect. Hahaha, platicky things. Hope you’re having a riot, imitating the stars celestial, today, Marsha. By the way, I’ve almost finished your reading list from your Willie Nelson post about travel. Introduced me to some fantastic new blogs I hadn’t come across yet, thank you so much. Too groovy- aj

          6. Platicky…what full of platitudes? (Of course, as I’m trying to fly away, I notice the typo) Platypus and ticks? Hmm that might be fitting. (wags head to snap out of it) I only had one sip of coffee today. ONE. And look at all this hyper nonsense. Sheesh.

          8. Good gawd, you don’t, it can wear all of humanity out if I’m not careful…poor bedraggled Sir often gets the worst of it, as you know. Sometimes we go galumphing through the swamps until 3 am. On one of those perfect nights…serrated alligator-backs glittering in the moonlight, rabbits screaming in piercing terror as predators spring through the darkness, baby owls rasping so eerily, you briefly start to believe in monsters.

Sir wanes sometimes, but quickly resumes wobble-legging it- he knows I’ll immediately start twinkling Teddyisms at him for “sprightly motivation.”

“Now Sir, what would Teddy say at all this loafing around on benches? Courage is not having the strength to go on- it is going on when you. don’t. have. the STRENGTH!” I’ll boom at him in my best faux Teddy barrel- an imitation of the character with the Teddy complex, in Arsenic and Old Lace. Sir’s not-so-favourite film/play.

“Be SILENT and always charge ahead with a BIG walking stick!” I bawl, distorting another quotation.

“Big stick…yeah…to knock you over the head with…” Sir mutters under his breath. He thinks I cannot hear but owls listening to the tiny putter of mice beneath three feet of snow have worse hearing than I do.

“TR would wag his elephant gun at you in shame, Sir, slumping over like that to gasp and flap your arms like a little girl, spilling water all over yourself. I’m disappointed…”

Always works. My victim, I mean Sir, teeters right up and tries to swirl away from me every time.

Hum, I must give the impression of an insomniac with all these references to trampling through forests in the moonlight and stampeding across cities until the grand rivening of the heavens at dawn.

I imagine you’re often working wildly on projects and reading with gusto into the night. 😀 Who was it that said sleep was for weaklings?? Or they’ll sleep when they’re dead? Benjie Franklin perhaps. Grins. Cheers- aj

          9. I just don’t have Sir to drag behind me. I’m in there all by myself. Vince is safely ensconced in his blankets, with the light on waiting for me. the cats sleep soundly until the moment I pull back the covers and slide in next to my sleeping tiger, then they pounce on his feet and yowl in my ear. Or they wait an hour until I’ve fallen completely to sleep, then they will pounce on him or yowl in my ear. 🙂

    1. Wow, you’ve been busy, Autty. I’m sure you are going to have a great trip. Especially if you can take your time and stop and take pictures along the way. My last shot was March 3, so I’m good to go and ready to do it. I want to go back to CA and see friends ASAP. I’m ready for some warm weather. You can’t tell the difference between snow and blossoms right now. We have both! They are super tenacious, too. The wind blew at gale force yesterday, and they just hung on to those trees like they were attached with super glue. Amazing. Let me know what your travel schedule is. I’m so glad to hear from you. 🙂

      1. So, so happy to hear it, Marsha! Groooove. I look forward to all the photos from your return visit to CA. Gale force winds? Cannot tell the difference between blossoms and snow as the blooms clutch the branches for dear life in a wild snarl of wind? Oh my, your imagery…I’m dizzy, this place sounds perfectly sanguine. 😉

In a few weeks, we’ll “hit the road” again on our scouting trip…hmm I seem to hear Willie’s slightly melancholic voice singing in my head again…now where did that come from…

I meant it literally, it sounds like the perfect habitat. I love dynamic weather and challenging terrain. Your future hikes are going to be more and more astonishing, I suspect.

Har oops, I was attempting a wink there, referencing another post you did recently on travel, where you mentioned your Dad’s favorite song for road-trips, but didn’t quite get a chance to finish my joke as a cat tornado tore through the room and my mind scattered into a billion tiny dust-motes. I suffer so, in this life…sigh. 😉

We rode our e-bikes 11 miles yesterday on Peavine Trail, and got almost to the end. But we didn’t take many pictures. We were too busy staying on the path, pedaling, trying not to run into anyone, etc. Keep me aprised on everything. 🙂 Hugs and cheers, Autty. 🙂

          3. E-socks, E-bikes, you guys are so rad. Sir wants an E-bike. He once applied for a job writing technical manuals for one of his favorite E-bike companies in Seattle. Was too much of a side-job, however- a job he’d like to do to supplement teaching perhaps. Did I tell you he’s been thinking about going back to school to become a science teacher?

Peavine Trail….just looked up the terrain there…when may I dig a dark dingy hole beneath your house and live in it? GAH gorgeous. What a ride that must have been…

I am so sorry, what the…I guess one sip of coffee is just too much for me…it really was just a sip. I want more sips but I’m putting the black Lucifer-liquor back into the refrigerator now…By the way, do you resort to earplugs to help with the distractions? Or anything else? I’ve been trying some new things. I’ve always been a “crazy person making strange rattling sounds alone in a shed in the woods” sort of person, and require that kind of isolation for any sustained thought. As you know, Florida is not a place for solitude. Beautiful, but noisy and crowded. Another boon about the pending move to upstate NY. I’ll be able to make such a place for myself, again. Going to be a hoot. Oh the heavenly silence of winter…

          6. The bikes are Lectric. They ware inexpensive (comparatively). They took over two months from the time he ordered them to arrive.

I don’t resort to ear plugs, but I do close the door and make Vince watch tv with the volume at a normal or less level. He reads the screen because he won’t wear hearing aids. My distractions come more from my mind reminding me of things I need to do, then getting up to do them before I forget what I was thinking. 🙂

Her boyfriend was over within a couple of hours, loaded up everything and took it away. I contacted her later, and she put up pictures of how she used some of the stuff in her new house. 10. Hi Marsha, Your post is a wonderful resource and I am bookmarking to make sure I read/meet some of the bloggers new to me. The topic of leisure reminds me of Stephen Covey’s lists and priorities. Often we spend too much time on urgent and chore lists (A and B) when the C category contains our fun activities. Like you say, Marsha, our “precious leisure” activities. Wonderful how you and your Dad used to play chess. An important Sarah Breathnach quote. I will mull on your quote suggestion. She once repaired a pair of my mother’s shorts before she could wear them to garden. By repair, I mean add about three inches on each side so she could get into them. And not the same fabric. By the time she finished, so the story goes, she was way too tired to work in the garden! 🙂

So far, Yellowstone and Grand Teton has been the most amazing, even over Hawaii because I was with Frank. I think if I went to Hawaii with Frank, it would top the list. 🙂

        1. You have some great and wonderful goals. Mine are more vague. I grab opportunities as they come to me. I don’t aspire to go anywhere but the western states’ National Parks.

          1. LOL! I’ve dreamed of Ireland and Scotland for 30 years. So, my goals may be high, but getting there is another thing. I’d be happy to just go west right now. 🙂

          2. Start with what comes available. I never pass up an opportunity. 🙂 Learned that from Michener’s autobiography.

      1. I have heard several people love that game. I’m not sure we’ve played it, but there are a lot of games that are similar and known by different names. I’ll have to look that one up because I’ve heard it a few times now. 🙂

      2. We played at Christmas time when my BFF & hubby came for the holidays. They are supposed to come in April so I’m sure we will be playing again. Looking forward to that. The thing with the game is house rules are different everywhere. I don’t care what they are as long as they are clearly defined at the beginning. We have our own set of house rules. 🙂 I miss Bunco too. A bunch of girls would get together once a month or every couple of months and have a Bunco party. Can’t wait for the pandemic to get under control. 🙂

        1. When we play pinochle, we sometimes call in the house rules instituted by my BFF’s former husband who passed about ten years ago. Her husband now is overruled 3-1 and you can’t fight a dead husband. 🙂

          1. LOL! He might come back to haunt you if you don’t do things his way. I have no problem playing house rules as long as they are established ahead of time. 🙂

          2. LOL, not me, he will haunt her new husband, Kelly! It’s Bob’s rules we use no matter how much Kelly complains! Kelly is getting used to it after about 8 years. 🙂

          6. It is we both lost our husbands and both missed the other spouse because their deaths took away our social lives! Very selfish but we’ve been like sisters for 35 years.

          7. Now I can see why those are such memorable moments. Y’all have been through a lot together. I suspect that both of them would want you two to live on and find love again, which you have. Not selfish at all….part of the grieving process. 🙂

          8. Yes. her husband was the one who took me on the motorcycle ride around in the country in Elderwood where we both eventually moved and lived for 20 years.

          10. He’s the one who passed away about ten years ago. He was borderline bipolar and didn’t talk sometimes for a whole night of card-playing, but the three of us talked for him, LOL. Her current husband is quite a talker. So different. Bob was a good listener.

          12. Kind of. They had some major similarities. One is that they are/were both handsome. Her current husband is about 78 and looks 60. Bob was more ruggedly handsome, but women loved him. He had eyes for only Jean, which made him more loveable.

          14. It’s sad to lose someone. Both of our husbands were very sick when they died. Hers had 21 brain tumors. The good news is that he was not in pain.

          15. Thank god he wasn’t in any pain. That’s a lot to be dealing with. That’s really all we can ask for is to not be in pain. 🙂

          16. He actually was funny. You never knew what he was going to say, and that wasn’t a bit like him. Probably the radiation treatments knocked out his inhibitions. He was never himself after that.

          1. It is best played with at least 8 people. 3 dice per table. 4 people per table. It is so much fun. Sometimes we would have 8 or 12. One time we had 20. It was really too much but it was a fun party. 🙂

          2. I’ve been a stand-in at a bunko party. The most important thing is who you’re playing with.

          3. Yes it is. We switch partners after each round. It’s so fun! We also have a buy in and place 3 different places. High score, most Buncos and lowest score gets their buy in back.
