Brokenness Invites Light
A rocky stairway in Kings Canyon National Park took my breath away as my friend Monica and I hummed a “Stairway to Heaven.” The pieces of broken rock let in the light and lead us to a lookout where we marveled at the valley floor. If the rock hadn’t broken, the light would be obliterated.

Like the broken rocks glowing in the sunlight, Snickerdoodle, a three-week-old orphan my husband found in our yard, broken, full of fleas, eyes matted shut, dehydrated, and barely able to walk was broken. Even a bottle and some antibiotics were not enough to cure this little kitten. The vet had no appointment available for two weeks, but I took him in wrapped in a towel at the very end of the day.

His broken body moved the receptionist and doctor. Dr. Haggard gave him an IV of fluid, and more antibiotics, and told us he might not make it. My heart was light because at least the little guy had a chance.

Snickers brought light into our lives as we fed him every three or four hours and watched him get stronger. We think his ordeal blinded him, but it did not stop him from running to see us at feeding time.
Nestled against me Fluid forced through his clenched teeth He learned to suckle
Even though he had cuddled his way into our hearts, after Snickers healed, my husband found him a new home with two teenage girls who had lost their mother. We hope that he brought more light into their home as well.
Like the stairs carved from the mountain, broken lives bless us and allow the light within us to shine as we care for someone or something beyond ourselves.

Hmm. Very intriguing Marsha. I will have to look into this further. Though I shy away from too many bloggy challenges, this one has piqued my curiosity. My muse Lapham’s Quarterly is loaded with quote sidebars. To be determined… 😉

I am soooooo happy to be broken, Norah! LOL BTW congrats on all your awards and honorable mentions on the Rodeo Contest. We met this week. Charli was so please with what everyone did, and asked us to host next year. I am happy to, especially if you and Irene judge for me again.
