What Do You Do for Fun Where Agriculture Is King?

Live the Dream

Big L RanchToday after church my husband said, “I want to go out and see a new U-Pick blueberry farm I saw on Facebook.”

U-Pick Blueberries

Big L RanchBig L Ranch hosts events and has the truck set up for those who want to take photographs.

The Botanical Garden’s Berry Festival is next Saturday, so this was a perfect time.

Off we went to find Big L Ranch at 20899 Avenue 322 in Woodlake, CA. We had so much fun.

Like Avila Barn

We arrived on the second week of their ranch adventure.

Big L RanchOne of the owners, Jada Lee, told us that her model is Avila Barn, one of my favorite spots when we go to the coast.

Big L RanchLike Avila Barn, have activities for the family to enjoy while you pick berries.

Big L RanchIt was fun, friendly, and homey.

Big L RanchJada Lee is an artist. She and friends create and sell handmade items. A friend of hers made these. I did not write down her name.

Big L RanchThe bowl took dozens of hours. If I had done it, I’d still be working on it from my childhood.

Big L RanchThese cups are adorable.

They even have artwork on the bottom.

The ranch has four acres in blueberries and will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00am to 7:00pm through early June.

Big L RanchThere is more to do than pick berries. They serve the most delicious blueberry treats like muffins, scones served with homemade vanilla ice cream.

Big L Ranch“Did you say ice cream?”

“Yes, Jack, there’s ice cream.”

Jada made unique cabinets from discarded materials.

This is Lee’s first harvest. They are not new to the area but have lived on the ranch for six years. Watch the video to hear how they got started.

Big L RanchMatt Lee teaches at the Tulare County Office of Education Court and Community Schools. It was fun to learn that we knew several people in common, including my friend Elane Geller, who survived the Holocaust and Scott Dakers, who taught with Matt.

My husband knows his cousin, realtor, Robert Lee.

Big L RanchWe enjoyed a fabulous hour or two hanging around visiting and eating. You and your kids can have a great time here.

Big L Ranch

They expect to enlarge and have even more fun activities. You can also schedule events at Big L Ranch. Contact Matt and Jada Lee at biglranch@outlook.com 559-280-2767. We thought they were delightful, and think you will also.

  1. Splendid! Sir and I and an occasional abductee, I mean, tag-along chum or two, like to go farm-hopping, too. Is there anything better than fresh produce right from the source, still warm from the sun?? I think not. It’s an addicting activity, trolling the U-Pick farms, I must say.

Our blueberry season just ended here; I can taste those berries right there with you. 😉 We went peach-picking, too (even shorter season here), and last weekend experienced a sunflower maze for the first time.

By the way, that artwork was spectacular. I would love to own one of those stunning mugs. Intricate and scintillating.

    Too wonderful.

    Cheers,

    • Her last week to be open in the 12th. I need to go get some to take to Kiwanis on Tuesday. I’m fixing breakfast. Waffles with blueberries. Yum! Vince picked two huge peaches from our 8-10 peach trees. Usually the birds get there first. Normally they are the size of my thumb, but this year they are bigger than my fist. Yay!

Those mugs were something else, weren’t they. A friend of Jada’s made them. Very cool. 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend, Ms. Toad. 🙂

      • Congratulations on the hearty harvest. I can just taste them. The fresh peaches we picked were a bit smaller than fist-sized and wow were they crackling with flavour. I also had the luxury of petting some giant horses that moseyed over to the fence while others did the manual labor amongst the peach trees behind me. Sigh. It was about 90 degrees out in direct, broiling sun, but well worth the effort- horse-petting is always worth the effort. 😉

That breakfast sounds glorious. I love to chop and toss them into my water-bottle, shake it up a bit. It makes it look like I’m swigging on a bottle of mildew water, happily scaring the public away. A tasty people-deterrent, I call it. 😉

Wishing you and Vince a stupendous, chortle-worthy weekend, as well.

        Smiling cheers.

Hi, I'm Marsha Ingrao, a retired educator and wife of a retired realtor. My all-consuming hobby is blogging and it has changed my life. My friends live all over the world. In November 2020, we sold everything and retired to the mile-high desert of Prescott, AZ. We live less than five miles from the Granite Dells, four lakes, and hundreds of trails with our dog, Kalev, and two cats, Moji and Nutter Butter. Vince's sister came with us and lives close by. Every day is a new adventure.
