Seven Tips for Using Photos in Your Blog in 2020

Millions of people write blogs and are using photos. Here are seven tips to make your blog more interesting by processing and using photos effectively. This blog is about writing, blogging, and photography, aimed at helping new and hobby bloggers create great blogs.

Tip One:  Resize your photos before you upload them to 800 x 533 or smaller.  They load much faster and take up less storage on wordpress.com sites that have limited space. They load faster on graphic programs like Canva.com as well.

On a self-hosted site, download the plugin EWWW Image Optimizer. If these ideas don’t work, and your site is still slow, consider switching to a different hosting service.

Tip Two: Have you spent hours searching for a photo you can see in your mind but can’t remember when you took it? Some cloud storage programs have search capabilities that eliminate some of your angst. You can help yourself if you label all your photos so you can locate them later.  Labels like “IMG 296340689” hinder your efforts. Adding a title to the number makes it easy to find.

Tip Three: Tell your stories around a photo challenge to expand your audience, and learn from others writing about similar themes.

Tip Four: Use the text tool or batch processing in photo processing programs to protect your photos and to develop your brand and give yourself credit with a watermark.

Tip Five: Keep some of your poor photos. You never know when they might be perfect for a photo challenge or as a bad example.

Tip Six: Use and reuse your photos in new ways. Crop photos to create more focus. You now have a completely different picture. Put a frame around it using the resize canvas menu.

Tip Seven: Try Canva.com. You can upload your photos and set them in frames, graphic shapes, backgrounds, and add text, which is clearer than Photoshop. Canva.com has the correct size template for every kind of graphic you could want from a Facebook header to a logo or business card.

    Our photos are stored on an external hard drive in labelled folders and backed up the same way on another external hard drive. I sort holiday photos into folders for each day, labelled with the date and where we were that day. Before using photos on my blog I always reduce the size to 650 for landscape and 450 for portrait oriented photos. I don’t delete photos I think are no good until I’ve looked at them on the computer screen. Sometimes they are better than they look on the camera!

      Good advice not to delete. Do you have a Mac? One thing I hate about that is the photo storage, and not being able to post from that. I guess the photos go directly to the Mac cloud somewhere. It’s nice not to lose them.

        No I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. I think unless you’re going to have an iPad, iPod and iPhone, having a Mac would be annoying. I love my new Surface. I can store things in One Drive if I want.

    I keep only the photos I am working with on my laptop. The rest are in files in memory sticks. 😀 ❤

      You are so organized, MFR. Mine are all over. I have photos in my white and my red external hard drive, in the photos icon on my mac which is where they download, but not where you can upload them from to put in your website,, in the pictures file in the Finder, in Picassa online, in my Google drives, and I have several of them, in Dropbox, old ones are in my Toshiba computer that Vince uses. I have some copies on a cloud file I don’t use anymore, I have a couple of memory sticks with scanned photos for my book, and let’s see, oh yes and in WordPress and Facebook. I think that’s about it. 🙂

        Oh boy ! What a mess ! You’re clogging up the internet MVBFM 😀 lol
        Most of my photos end up on my blog anyway. So the files on memory sticks mainly have post titles. I also keep all passwords and personal details in memory sticks as well 😀
