Mondays – Ask Marsha Lee: Blogging Challenges

Do you ever get the blogging blues?

I had them last week, and you all brought me right out of them.  So far I have had 122 responses to the poll asking you which articles you would like to see.  I combined several categories, and came up with a schedule that will make me less meandering like a stream, more like a river that knows where it’s going, and it’s all downhill from here!  TGIM!  I got this music from Viveka’s blog, My Guilty Pleasures.

To learn how to embed soundtracks, I went to chat, and Andrea referred me to this article.

Here is my first Monday Ask Marsha Lee post.  You can ask me anything about retirement, blogging, photography, writing, history.  Just call me Google.  If I don’t know the answer, I’ll look for it.  If I can’t find it, I’ll throw it out to the blogosphere.  You can contact me by email:  tchistorygal@gmail.com or right here on the blog in the comment section.

Here’s my first question.

– I made a separate page for my awards & now I can’t get it to show up on the top of my page. Do you have any ideas?

After you create your page, you decide where you want to put it in your menu.  It isn’t automatic.

Appearance - Menus

Appearance – Menus

In your Dashboard go to the Appearance Page on the left hand menu bar.  Within Appearance there are sub categories.

  1. Choose menus.
  2. Click on the menu you want to add and press “Add to Menu”.
  3. Then go to the top of the next column where it says Menu Structure.  You can move the pages up and down.  You can also hover it over another item and slip it in as a sub item.

Menues Page1

You can see on my “About” page I have four sub pages.  If you read all that, you will really know a lot about me – TMI!  🙂  Most people never get past the first level of the menus.

Blog for writing

Speaking of pages, a blogger friend is using his blog to write a book.  It is frustrating because if each post is a chapter, it won’t be long before Chapter 1 is buried.  Readers will be reading the end of the story first!  A better solution might be to make each one a page, then you can organize them in your menu bar.  Your blog can be something else altogether, or it can be out-takes from your book.  I learned this trick from my friend Marcia who allowed me the privilege of reviewing her book as she was writing it.  On my website if you click on the book titles, the chapters show up as sub pages.  If you only have one book you wouldn’t have to have sub pages.

JT shared a problem he has with creating pages.

Pages don’t show up in the WP Reader. For example, my ‘about’ page that everyone is so fond of, is really only read by new followers. It has never shown up in the reader.

That’s enough challenges for one day!  Solving one or two of them is pretty good, don’t you think?

  • correcting a photo in photoshop – go see Leanne Cole, or other bloggers that I’ll list on a resource page coming soon
  • embedding a sound track
  • page visibility in the menu bar
  • posts appearing in reverse order
  • pages not appearing in the WP  Reader

Have a great week. Come see me tomorrow for a Review of a book, hotel, or restaurant.  Which would you prefer?

  1. I voted for movie review, but I guess I probably missed this intake? lol… I’d really love to hear what you think of Despicable Me 2!! *giggling*.. I’m not even sure that you would watch such movies, though I am kind of partial to them, just as well as my children are HUGE fans!

Do you by chance like BB King? I’m listening to alot of his music lately, so it would be interesting to hear about what you think about his tunes

Thanks also for the troubleshooting tips.. lol.. I was wondering about that page business myself for a while!

    • Despicable Me 2 I haven’t seen. Normally I love animated movies for kids, but I don’t watch them all. I’m also not a great blues fan in general, but some things are classified as blues thatI really like. I just listened to BB King to see if I like him or even if I had heard him before. Rambly music that has no melody or words is not my favorite. It’s good background music, and I’ve grown accustomed to it. 🙂 I like to experiment and expand my tastes, though. :

      • I only start listening to BB King earlier this year. There is a Fantastic Album which have some songs with beautiful, heartfelt lyrics.

Take it home really DOES whatever it is music does to have me stop and pay attention.

That entire Album is wonderful for my ears.

Right now I’m listening to Beverley Craven, Promise me. I think I’m stuck in an alternative Timelife world! *blank stares*

        • Yes, although I do like some alternative music. Again, I don’t listen with a discerning ear. My bad! I need to start paying attention to who’s performing. For someone who loves reading, music, ect, unless I do something with it – like write a report, I don’t ALWAYS pay attention to the name of the author. I jump to the content. Yikes – and here I am a writer! What’s up with that???

          • Lol, and a wonderful writer you are! AS a child I absolutely hated listening to Charlie Pride and or any other kind of country music for that matter. My birth mother used to love it and she would torture us with it playing it in one of those auto reverse tape decks on long drives.. *giggling*

She actually passed away when I was 16 and now, for whatever reason, I love listening because I associate with fond memories. I like you have a diverse taste in music and I can probably say not many of the songs I like is just because of how it sounds, but for the memories associated with them.

          • Memories are hooked very strongly to music. My strongest memories are with musicals such as My Fair Lady. My parents loved musicals, and my dad collected albums. When he played his music, we weren’t allowed to talk because the object was to enjoy the music. I haven’t thought of that for a very long time! 🙂

  2. Great track ….. one of my favorite songs and it makes me always so happy. Great job, now my secret is out. *smile … GREAAAaAaAet post!
This with more than one page … personal I have never checked more than the main page – and some times there is too many pages to chose in between and I never find anything I want. So that is only my thoughts about it. Have been thinking of moving my awards too – but I don’t think anyone click on that page, but we will get a cleaner … main page.
